Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Puberty, divorce, drugs, masturbation, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are all waiting to ambush the unsuspecting parent in a midchild crisis, and each one is thoroughly addressed in this encyclopedic tour of the years between infancy and adolescence. In fact, the chapters that cover traditional medical problems--ear infections, stomach aches, hives, broken bones--are in the minority. Most of the clear, simple writing is devoted to social matters and the psychology of parenting. What should you do if your child is being bullied? Is it OK for a child to attend a funeral at this age? How do you control temper tantrums? Does it help to repeat a grade if your child isn't doing well in school?

The second in a three-volume series, this revised and updated guide culls advice from more than 60 pediatric specialists. As a result, it assumes a middle-of-the-road stance meant for the average parent. For detailed information about complex topics, such as learning disabilities and chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes, parents may need to search for more specialized titles. But as a first reference and general guide, this book fills the parenting advice void in the middle years with a reassuring voice. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

From Publishers Weekly

This newest child-care guide from the American Academy of Pediatrics concentrates on the middle years of childhood. To make sure that parents don't become complacent after making it through their child's infancy, toddler and preschool years, the introduction warns that years five to 12 are most definitely not "a time when nothing much happens." This successor to 1991's highly popular Caring For Your Baby and Child is encyclopedic. Schor (an associate professor of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine) and his contributors cover subjects ranging from runny noses to racism, with ten chapters devoted solely to such school-related issues as homework and learning disorders. Uniformly bland prose and a determinedly nonjudgmental, continuously reasssuring approach, however, make for less than compelling reading. Mothers and fathers with five or more years of parenting experience may yearn for less encouragement and more direct, forcefully opinionated points of view, and readers searching for answers to particular problems might be better served by a more specifically focused child-care book. 3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book in the series, August 20, 2001
By A Customer
When my kids were younger, I relied on the first book in the American Academy of Pediatrics's series, Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, when my children were ill and when I had questions about whether they were growing and developing "normally." I thought this book would be similar, but cover older kids. It doesn't! As the Amazon review above mentions, discussions of childhood illnesses and injuries are kept to a minimum. Almost any time one of my kids has a symptom or illness and I'm wondering if it is serious enough to require a visit to the doctor, the book has little or nothing to say on the subject. Instead, there are lengthy discussions of things like ADHD and learning disabilities that you might never encounter in your kids, as well as info. on taking care of your kids' emotional health. Useful information, but not what I wanted when I bought a book from the APA!

5.0 out of 5 stars Contrary to above reviews ..., January 12, 2004
By A Customer
I have found this book to be up-to-date and very helpful. This is not a traditional medical guide -- don't look here for the symptoms of meningitis -- rather, it is a guide to the key developmental and behavioral issues of this age group. The book does NOT endorse an authoritarian approach-- to the contrary, it encourages parents to learn to communicate effectively with their kids, to develop a trusting, supportive relationship. Neither does it reinforce traditional gender roles. It shows the wide range of what is normal, including helpful descriptions of various temperaments, and what kind of behavior parents should consider warning signs that more help is needed. I've found this to be an insightful, compassionate guide to my son's inner (and outer) world, and it has helped my husband and me to be better parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Just what I wanted!, February 17, 2005
This book picks up just where the 0-5 book leaves off. I wanted this book for topics about talking to my kids about sex, emotional and behavioral issues and this book meets those needs plus many many more. It still touches on the most common illnesses and injuries (though someone below says it doesn't). Great book. If you liked the 0-5 one you will like this one as well!
