From Library Journal
Women are different! At least, their nutrition needs are different, as Gittleman, who has the credentials (MA in nutrition; author of Beyond Pritikin ; former director of nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center), and Dodson, who has the writing skills, explain in a cogently written, well-organized nutrition and diet guide for women. They present research-based data that does much to combat the extremism of some recent wild and wildly popular diet plans. The authors explain, among other things, exactly how sugar consumption triggers diabetes, the importance of the right kind of fats in the diet, the dangers of high-grain diets, the relation of diet to yeast infections, and how caffeine blocks iron and calcium use. They also advocate the return, in moderation, of red meat, eggs, and fat to the diet. Although this is not a workbook, some questionnaires and a food diary are included--readers will be tempted to fill them in. While not an essential purchase, this title will provide balance where radical diet plan books are popular. Recommended for comprehensive and academic subject collections.
