Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Quick's latest work, a flimsy and fairly routine piece, lacks the panache that made her earlier Regencies interesting. Prudence Merryweather and Sebastian Fleetwood, the "legendary" Earl of Angelstone, hit it off after meeting at a ball because they share an element of "intellectual curiosity": she hunts "spectral phenomena," and he (courtesy of a Bow Street Runner who slips him intriguing cases) hunts criminals. When, at another party, Prue and Sebastian are caught pussyfooting in the hostess's bedroom, an impromptu engagement results, giving them ample opportunity to poke into each other's investigations. Sebastian, whose parents were ill-treated by the family, has wanted revenge on his kin for years; when his aunt publicly insults Prue, he is ready to exploit his role as head of the family and get them booted out of society. However, Prue's moderating influence persuades him to set aside revenge and act as a benevolent patriarch, a scenario that may sound familiar to readers of Wildest Hearts, this author's most recent contemporary romance (written as Jayne Ann Krentz).

Product Description

From a magnificent ballroom ablaze with lights to an imposing country house steeped in shadows comes a breathtaking tale of an impetuous miss—and a passion that leads to peril...

At five and twenty, Prudence Merryweather knew very well tht risks a woman took by visiting a gentleman in the dead of night. But bearding the notorious Earl of Angelstone in his den was the only way to stop him from engaging her hot-headed brother in a duel. And that was why she found herself ushered into Sebastian's frobidding presence at three int the morning—and thoroughly kissed before dawn.

She was a country-bred innocent—and an intriguing experience for a man who dwelt more in the shadows than in the sunshine. Yet as her boldness drew Prue into one dangerous episode after another, Sebastian found himself torn between a raging hunger to possess her and a driving need to protect her. And the reckless beauty would soon need all the protection she could get...

5.0 out of 5 stars Risky business . . ., October 6, 2004
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
Risky business and loads of laughs make up Amanda Quick's _Dangerous_. Once again, Ms. Quick delivers characters who are so well suited for each other that they could only fall in love. Dubbed the Original and the Fallen Angel, Prudence and Sebastian are not defined by their monikers, but are defined by their unique and compelling personalities. Prudence is impulsive, persistent, and brave and Sebastian is dark, brooding, yet oh-so-gentle. These two meet and a love is forged that is at once beautiful and tumultuous. Sebastian has a penchant for growing bored easily, but Prue keeps him on his toes and always interested as she leads him on a merry chase. Watching Prue and Sebastian clash about what things are proper for a woman to do is vastly entertaining. It's also extremely funny how Sebastian confuses love with fondness while being profoundly jealous of other men's interest in Prue. For example, on the subject of a rather daringly cut gown, this exchange takes place:

_Prudence_, "My lord, are you implying that you do not care for my new gown?"

_Sebastian_, "What gown? I did not notice any gown on you tonight, madam. I thought perhaps you had forgotten to put it on before you left home."

Ms. Quick's wit shines through in this novel as it does in all of her work and you'll find yourself laughing aloud. As always, the mystery of the novel is the driving force and this one was quite intriguing. It will keep you guessing until the very last pages. Once again, Ms. Quick presents a tale full of romance, mystery, and humor that will keep you turning the pages and wishing for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another winner for Quick, January 7, 2000
By TaiganTwin (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
I must say that of all the Amanda Quick books I have read thus far, "Dangerous" is tied with "Mystique" in the running of my personal favorite.

Although Quick seems to use the same formula for all of historical romances (heroine with one distinct quirk + hero who needs to be taught to love and laugh = a love that will make you laugh, cry, and sigh), "Dangerous" had a few twists that gave it a distinct, well, likeability (No, that's not a real word but it captures the mood).

Prue (I can't stand the name Prudence but I love the nickname) is a refreshing character who is as artless and kind as she is quirky and intelligent. I like how in this particular novel, her quirk of solving mysteries is shared by the hero.

Sebastian is a delight. He lives up to most readers expectations as dark, mysterious, and badly in need of the heroine's love (whether he knows it or not) but his 'humoring' Prue is a treat to watch and his embracing of Prue's talent is a deviation from Quick's norm and makes it that much more enjoyable.

This book is more a sweet romance than a passionate one but contains witty dialogue, fun characters, and a fairly decent mystery (Although the end was very lacking. The murder's reaction when caught was disappointing and seemed forced).

All in all, a very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Breathtaking Adventure, June 22, 2000
By "-renee-" (GA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dangerous (Paperback)
Amanda Quick's Dangerous trounces most of the novels in the historical genre. The story is absolutely fabulous. This was the first Amanda Quick story I ever read and I have been hooked ever since.

Prudence Merryweather is a young woman who investigates the paranormal. She is a self proclaimed blue-stocking who has no interest in fashionable sociey. She is willing to risk everything to prevent her brother from dueling with Sebastian, the Earl of Angelstone.

Sebastian also known as the Fallen Angel is mysterious and misunderstood by sociey. He is a man who has spent too much time in the shadows and is positively fascinated by Prudence.

The two join up to investigate ghosts who are haunting several members of the ton. Sebastian is awed by Prudence's spirit and personality. Prudence is determined to prove the Fallen Angel doesn't deserve his nickname. The two are married due to extenuating circumstances and Prudence finally manages to thaw Sebastian's frozen heart.

Affair has everything any reader of romance needs for a sucessful story. The plot, characters, and dialogue are exceptional. Don't let this book pass you by.
