Review
'This important book takes up a neglected question in the study of language and gender ... [it] should be read, not only by linguists but by anyone with a serious interest in gender and public life'Professor Deborah Cameron, Institute of Education, London 'Walsh's book is very convincingly argued and illustrated, and shows that the 'discourse' approach ... opens up perspectives of analysis and understanding which more traditional analyses have hitherto left unexplored.'Jean-Pierre van Noppen, Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, Language and Literature 2003 12 (2).
Product Description
Clare Walsh explores the experience of women currently involved in linguistic domains traditionally monopolised by men and considers the impact women have made on the norms in language that govern public sphere discourse (eg in politics, professional occupations and organisations - pressure/lobby groups). Case studies are used throughout the book to illustrate the analysis of topics which include - the constraints operating on women who have negotiatied themselves public sphere roles and the strategies of resistance women develop in order to overcome these contraints.
