Editorial Reviews

Review

"A triumph...Jeremy Black has given us the most truly global and most nearly comprehensive history of the twentieth century. He does justice to vital but previously under-exploited themes: science, ecology, religion. He touches parts of the world other historians cannot reach" Felipe Fernandez-Armesto "Black's book works well as a wide-ranging survey of twentieth-century world history" History Vol. 88, Iss. 2, No. 290, Apr 2003

Product Description

The World in the Twentieth Century goes beyond two world wars to focus on the great themes of the twentieth century including the earth's environment, religion, fundamentalism and politics.

  • Offers a thematic account of the last 100 years of global history looking at themes as varied as scientific achievement and religious extremism
  • Examines changes in the natural environment and explores the changes brought by urbanization and development.
  • Forces us to rethink the way we view the past and offers us a new way to understand the present.
This is a beautifully illustrated examination of the twentieth century. Looking back to the 1910s and 20s, The World in the Twentieth Century begins with the "greatest issue of all" - the natural environment and its destruction, and moves to show how our world has been transformed by urbanization and development. The text explores amazing developments across the century including men walking on the moon, the internet revolutionizing communications, major advances in health and technology, and the growth of economic globalization. The author explores how these changes impacted on religion and politics and examines the persistent and growing extremism in religious belief. Jeremey Black examines how change creates instability and wars and how power blocs emerged and collapsed in response to all these developments. This book forces us to rethink the way we view the past and offers us a new way to understand the present.

Jeremy Black is the editor of the Dorling Kindersley Atlas of World History and has authored more than 30 books and and edited more than 100 other works. He has also been involved in several radio and TV productions in the UK.
