Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The title says everything the book contains. First, there is the idea, then the actual work: tools are employed for planting seeds that grow first into sprouts, then into plants and then vegetables. The process involves water, weeding, digging up and washing; finally, there is the reward of cooking the vegetables and, yes, eating the soupthe end of the chain, at least this year. The book provides a healthy dose of completely digestible information on growing and nurturing living things; it's also a zesty introduction to vivid, abstract art. Both Ehlert's illustrations and her basic instructions shed light and color on the simple pleasures of gardening. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1 This is the boldest, brassiest garden book to hit the market, and what a delight. Intensely colored graphics capture the complete growing process from seed to cooking pot, with the focus on the plants. The unseen narrator describes the process of growing vegetable soup, from preparing the tools and digging holes for the seeds to weeding plants; picking vegetables; washing, chopping, and cooking themand finally enjoying the homemade soup while planning to grow more next year. It's a fresh presentation of the gardening cycle with a joyful conclusion, and the added attraction of an easy and tasty recipe for vegetable soup on the flyleaf. A book to help nourish healthy readers. Barbara Peklo Serling, Oneida City Schools, N.Y.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Inquiring Minds, April 24, 2000
By Brenda (Texas) - See all my reviews
Children of all ages will enjoy this book, especially if they love to grow plants. Growing Vegetable Soup is also woderfully illustrated. I used this book in a Literacy Bag in conjuction with a Peter Rabbit Garden created by my university. An activity that can be used with the book for young children would be a matching game--vegetable or tool picture to word.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as impressed..., May 12, 2009
My 21mos old and I first read Lois Ehlert's "Eating through the Alphabet" and LOVED it. But while "Growing Vegitable Soup" is based on a cute concept... I found myself disappointingly unimpressed by this one. The colors are flat, it has poor contrast between object & background, and while the main wording is large... the print labeling the items is small, and hard to read. Overall this would probably be better in a larger (lap book?) size, and enjoyed by a beginner reader, rather than a toddler.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, March 5, 2006

(REAL NAME)
As a teacher, I have always loved this book. The bold colors hold children's attention, and it fits well with lessons for younger children on what seeds/plants need to grow, the growing process and includes a recipe for making your own vegetable soup. For early childhood teachers,it can become an early science/social studies/math lesson and also a parent/child activity. A must have!

As well as being attractive and quite an easy read (my five year old managed it), it encourages children to be interested in vegetables-both growing and eating them. Great book.
