Amazon.com Review

Hester Wyatt is a free black woman who harbors runaway slaves. Freedom fighter Black Daniel lands badly beaten on her doorstep. Hester finds herself attracted to the arrogant man. Their time together proves short and his goodbye causes her heartache. But not for long. He returns as Galen Vachon, a wealthy man accustomed to getting what he wants, and he loves and wants Hester. He showers her with gifts and attention, but his elite status means he can never marry her. She was once a slave, her stained indigo hands proof of her lowly status. When a slave catcher threatens them both, the Black Daniel comes to her rescue and forever captures her heart. A love story you won't want to miss; it touches the heart and soul. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Product Description

As a child Hester Wyatt escaped slavery, but now the dark skinned beauty is a dedicated member of Michigan’s Underground railroad, offering other runaways a chance at the freedom she has learned to love. When one of her fellow conductors brings her an injured man to hide, Hester doesn’t hesitate even after she is told about the price on his head. The man in question is the great conductor known as the “Black Daniel” a vital member of the north’s Underground railroad network, but Hester finds him so rude and arrogant, she begins to question her vow to hide him.

When the injured and beaten Galen Vachon, aka, the Black Daniel awakens in Hester’s cellar, he is unprepared for the feisty young conductor providing his care. As a member of one of the wealthiest free Black families in New Orleans, Galen has turned his back on the lavish living he is accustomed to in order to provide freedom to those enslaved in the south. However, as he heals he cannot turn his back on Hester Wyatt. Her innocence fills him like a breath of fresh air and he is determined to make her his, but traitors have to be found, slave catchers have to be routed and Hester’s refusal to trust her own heart have to be overcome before she and Galen can find the freedom only love can bring.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BEVERLY JENKINS BOOK YET!, October 6, 2000
By Von Gordon "mizdeeeva7" (San Jose, California United States) - See all my reviews
I do not normally read historical romances. I was selecting books from a book club, saw the Black characters on the cover and decided to give it try. I was amazed at the how vivid the characters were and how they seemed to almost jump off the page. More importantly, I WAS AMAZED THAT BEVERLY WROTE BOOKS ABOUT STRONG, SENSITIVE, GOOD BLACK MEN!!!!! I had never read a book that painted Black men in a such a positive light.

Not only is Galen stunningly handsome, but he truly loves Hester and spares no expense at showing her so. He is well read, wealthy, and has impeccable manners. I also like the fact that Hester is one of our darker skinned beauties. Therefore, smashing the horrible myth that Black is only beautiful if lighter in color.

I have since read each and every book Beverly Jenkins has written and they are all fabulous. Indigo is my favorite followed closely by Through the storm, a completely separate story, however, the characters were introduced in Indigo. I love the way she entertwines more than one story, and a large piece of African American history as well.

KEEP WRITING YOUR WONDERFUL BOOK BEVERLY!!! I HAVE INTRODUCED SO MANY OF MY FRIENDS, BOTH MALE AND FEMALE, TO YOUR WONDERFUL STYLE OF WRITING!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beverly Jenkins is the only romance writer I read, February 17, 2001
By mom in nocal (San Leandro, CA USA) - See all my reviews
Before Beverly Jenkins I didn't read romance novels. My experience had been suffering through several really bad, corny books to find a good one, or at least decent one. I was talked into trying one of Beverly Jenkins' books by a friend who even got me the book because I refused to waste my money. And what a wonderful, and exciting treat. I first read Vivid. I returned my friends copy and bought my own. And I have read all of Ms. Jenkin's books. I love the way she takes a background or supporting character from one book and tells their story in another. Her work is exceptional. She even gives a list of resources, at the end of each book, where the reader can find more information about black history of time period in her book. After much debating, my sister and I decided Indigo is our favorite. Through the Storm is also #1 because it's the life story of Galen's best friend, the main male characters in Indigo. Vivid, Nightsong,Topaz and Always and Forever would be my second favorites. I just can't choose. The thing I love most about her books is, unlike many Black, Books, Music, Movies, etc., she portrays black people as the intelligent, industrious, complex people we are instead of the stereotypical, crying over a man, can't find a job, somebody is cheating, self hating, loud and wrong images we constantly see. Those of us that don't relate to those negative images have a hard time finding stories that we do relate to about educated, or not, career minded, black, people in love relationships that are just dealing with life's problems and success, ups and downs. I love this author and can't wait for the next book. Any movie deals in the works for one of these fabulous stories?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever!!!, September 9, 2002
By Bridgett Gibson (Indianapolis, In) - See all my reviews
I absolutely love this book. You could feel the love between Galen and Hester.

He loved her sooo much, he was her friend, lover, protector, and teacher.

If I could find a man to love me that much mentally and physically, I swear I would be happy living in a shack for the rest of my life as long as I had that man by my side.

When Galen found Hesters mother that topped off the whole story. If you never read any of this authors work please, please read INDIGO!
