4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical business book, August 25, 2006
Reviewed by Cyndy Zoch for Reader Views (8/06)

Don't pick up this book and expect it to be a typical business book. There are no long drawn out discussions of what a mission is and why it is important. You will not find 200 pages on the theories behind what makes a good vision statement and why. If you flip through the pages, you might actually think you have picked up a children's book by mistake. There are lots of simple pencil sketches and big print. The chapters are short - most topics are discussed in one or two pages. For that matter, the book is short - only 130 pages.

But don't let the seeming simplicity of the book fool you. This book says more in just a few words than any other book about vision and mission statements I have ever read. Dr. Bilanich uses simple language and easy to understand examples about how an organization can take the vision off the piece of paper it is written on, and bring it to life within the organization.

Using an easy to follow format, "Using Values to Turn Vision into Reality" guides the reader through creating a vision, communicating the vision, and then using the organizational values to actualize the vision. Dr. Bilanich then provides a considerable amount of detail on how to recognize when the organizational processes do not line up with the values. He also devotes several chapters to leaders - explaining how leaders can help themselves and their employees make sure they are acting in a manner that lives out the values and helps the organization move toward achieving its vision.

Some readers will probably not like the simplicity of the book. They will feel there is not enough substance to do justice to the topic. While I agree that there may be better books on how to develop a mission and vision, I do not believe that you can find a better book, written as concisely, to help you implement your vision throughout the organization. As someone who has read many books on how to develop and implement a vision and mission statement, I appreciate the brevity of "Using Values to turn Vision into Reality."

Dr. Bilanich has pared the topic down to the essentials and written a book that can be read in a few hours and implemented immediately. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with how to begin to incorporate their values into their organization or perhaps is wondering why they are not getting the results they hoped for.

Vision. Values. Mission. Purpose. Charter. Culture. If you get lost in all the buzzwords, this book is for you. It shows you how to turn it all in to concrete actions which help your team accomplish the work!
