For millions, the advent of spring brings thoughts of allergy prevention and treatment. Dermatologist Novick ( Super Skin , LJ 10/15/88; Baby Skin , LJ 11/1/91) here provides basic information on allergies, allergy prevention, and treatment options. He also discusses the immune system, antihistamines, rhinitis, and asthma. His chapters on allergens in homes, on pets, and in food are reminders that vigilance is required. Novick also offers good advice on moldproofing a home. Environmental allergies as well as makeup and medication choices are considered, and two appendixes provide information on allergy tests and medications. Despite this wealth of information, the book has some drawbacks. Novick fails to give citations from the medical journals he mentions. A checklist of inciting agents for rhinitis would have been helpful as would a listing of predisposing factors leading to sinusitis (e.g., swimming, diving, cigarette smoke, and dental extractions).
