An Atypical Relationship Novel, May 2, 2002
Mona McMartin's marriage is over - and she knows it. She announces that she's leaving, and as easy as that she and her husband are on the way to the courthouse. Once the deed is done, however, Mona finds that she's not quite ready to banish Clay from her life. Their divorce, it seems, has fanned the flames of their flagging romance. Observing this, Clay and Mona agree to keep living together, but without any claim on each other. It becomes an odyssey of sorts, a trip through the intricacies of open marriages and swinging sexuality. Mona experiments with bisexuality, and finds some sweet men along the way. She doesn't have much interest in Clay's affair; she's too busy pursuing her own! Then they decide to get married again, and their entire relationship falls down around their ears. Their actions, they find, have serious consequences. Can their relationship survive? Frankly, I wasn't expecting the extra-marital exploration in this book, and was a bit uncomfortable with it at first. Acclimation was fairly easy, however. Putting aside my monogamous tendencies, I enjoyed reading about Mona and Clay's exploration. It was hip and modern, and I found Mona to be a very "now" kind of female. She was totally aware of her needs and determined to fulfill them, even if it meant the sacrifice of her marriage. I appreciated that the author delved into the consequences, as well. It added to the overall realism of the story. While Playtime is not going to be a personal favorite of mine, I unhesitatingly recommend it to readers who enjoy and appreciate reading about the swinging/open marriage lifestyle.
