Product Description
Jean Pearson, a 29-year-old veterinarian from Youngstown, Ohio, arrives in Fort Lauderdale to arrange for the funeral of her father and uncle. It appears that they died in a typical gasoline engine boating explosion until Jean learns that the blast was caused by a bomb. She hardly has time to react to this news when she is pursued in a high-speed car chase, and barely escapes being kidnapped. Frightened and alone, Jean meets a girlhood friend, a wealthy Anglo-Mexican socialite who invites Jean to stay aboard her yacht. Together they set out to investigate the murders, and they soon uncover a web of treachery that leads to government corruption, tangled conspiracies, cocaine smuggling, and a billion-dollar land fraud scheme. Targeted for assassination, they find themselves being hunted by both the villains and the police as they careen through Florida in a desperate gamble to find the only evidence that will ensure their survival. They make their way to a battered women?s shelter, Jean kills a corrupt police officer, their world turns upside down, and they roar off on a motorcycle stolen from a gang member as they ricochet toward their first adventure?s startling conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A happy ending, June 14, 2001
By Rosalind Chandler (Chino Valley, AZ) - See all my reviews
It is so refreshing to read a book about women who cope with life's raw challenges, and still have a happy ending where the good people prevail. I especially like the fact that these characters grew during the book, like real people. There are no gimmicks here, just really good storytelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic mystery within a mystery, April 19, 2001
By Anita Greene (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This is a Ft. Lauderdale mystery in the classic tradition, and the rumor on the Internet is that "The Black Squall" features Travis McGee's daughter, Jean. I have just read the book, and it is really very good, but I can't make up my mind whether the main character, Jean, is McGee's daughter or not. This seems to be a mystery within a mystery. Nevertheless, it is one fine read, with female detectives, lots of action, and interesting plot twists.

5.0 out of 5 stars You go, girls!, June 7, 2001
By Alex S. Penrose "swmusgrove" (Easley, SC United States) - See all my reviews
The two women in this book are like Thelma and Louise, only smarter. They manage to outwit the bad guys with no help from male macho types. This is a thrilling adventure by a woman, about women, for women, and it is very intelligently written. I stayed up half the night finishing it and was zonked at the office the next day, but it was worth it. I can't wait to read the sequel. You go, girls!

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 Gold Stars for The Black Squall
Lori Stone's work is a lot of fun. Sure, I have some editorial quibbles about it, and it's not exactly Tolstoy, but it's a great effort to keep alive the tradition of a very... Read more
