Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Join the author on a bicycle ride that you won¡¯t easily forget. As he leaves behind all the ties of metropolitan Southern California, he rediscovers the simple joys of life, childhood and human nature. He takes you along on his solo tour across the United States, traveling the northern route from Seattle to New York City. The author relates, first-hand, his impressions of urban and rural America. His tape-recorded thoughts and descriptions take you to the very place and time, from the early selection of equipment and routes, to the final entry into metropolitan New York.

You will find and appealing sense of humor, a recollection of childhood years in Wisconsin, and the insights of a man with age and wisdom on his side. He tells of the joys of a tailwind, the hardship of a headwind, and the deep appreciation of Mother Nature in all her forms. Your are given an intimate look at this man and his love of his country.

About the Author
Raised on a farm in Wisconsin, Harold Wagoner relocated to Southern California in his early 30s. It was during his work in the aerospace industry that his bicycle riding began in earnest. His love of outdoor recreation is shown through kayaking, hiking, fishing and camping.

5.0 out of 5 stars A striking book., January 11, 2002
By Karlene Johnson (Broken Arrow, Oklahoma USA) - See all my reviews
I found this an easy to read book about something I wish I had the guts to undertake. I like Wagoner's technique of narrating the mile by mile and his impressions of the local people. I admire him for making the tour and also for writing the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down home humor, March 31, 2002
By Howard Worthen (Bakersfield, California USA) - See all my reviews
Harold's descriptive writing made me feel I was riding with him every day. His "down home" humor reminded me of my childhood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!, February 14, 2002
By Sharon Haynes (Bend, Oregon U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
A friend bought me this book because I am interested in bicycle touring. Reading it was a real experience-and I mean real, not created. Wagoner's mile by mile narration makes the ride (and the book) as realistic as if I was doing it myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Saddle up and roll out
This is a nearly stream of consciousness account of one man's journey. The writing, as freely acknowledged by the author, is not top notch. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars What a trip!!!
Reading this book was like driving by a car wreck - you know you probably shouldn't keep looking, but somehow you just can't stop. First the good stuff: Harold can ride. Read more

I thoroughtly enjoyed reading 28 Days Behind Bars. Wagoner knows how to bring things to life with words. It was as though I were right there with him throughout his tour.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that great.
I found this book disappointing, especially after reading the rave reviews of others. This book tells the story of Harold Wagoner's bike ride from Seattle to New York. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars I am a author
28 Days Behind Bars is an extremely good book. Wagoner has taken a lot of time to write his book, and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars "28 Days Behind Bars" is a remarkable read.
The author of this book is real. Not some physically fit fitness fanatic. He is an ordinory man, who not only likes his handlebars but also the local taverns (bars). Read more
