Kate Lancaster is a beautiful, spirited, eighteenth century English aristocrat who is devastated when both her beloved parents are mysteriously murdered. Christopher Bradshaw, the handsome and considerably older family friend, vows to help Kate find the killer. Their attraction for each other grows as their relationship deepens, but it is a forbidden love because Christopher is trapped in a loveless marriage. To make matters worse, his obnoxious wife Claudia is constantly trying to persuade Kate into marrying their spoiled, roguish son, Lucas.
Kate eventually leaves her peaceful country estate for the bustle of London in order to be closer to the authorities investigating her parents' murder and finds romance, intrigue and mystery awaiting her.
