Editorial Reviews

Product Description
George Estrada's first book adds a whimsical new voice to the Asian American literature. I Have Tasted the Sweet Mangoes of Cebu takes readers on a star-crossed journey through the Philippines in search of his roots, the perfect love and the meaning of it all.

His quest to win the heart of Liza, a beautiful, young woman he meets on the Internet, turns into a descent into delirium as Estrada tries to reconcile his Philippine passions and his Western mind.

In the hilarious and sometimes painful flashback sequences, the author recounts his experiences as a journalist with The Oakland Tribune, a doctoral student at the University of Texas and a professor at Humboldt State University in Northern California. Now he needs to put all that intellectual training behind him and "go native" to win the woman of his dreams. The bittersweet ending will amaze and astound you.

About the Author
Dr. George Estrada is a professor of journalism at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California, and a former reporter and columnist with The Oakland Tribune. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997. He currently lives in Eureka, California, with his wife and son.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very cool book about the FIlipino American experience!, April 27, 2005
By Lora (Davao City, Philippines) - See all my reviews
This book has it all, from bittersweet romance, to international intrigue. You will learn a lot about the author's experience as a journalist, a professor and the forbidden woman in the Philippines he desperately loves. Highly recommended. You will be intrigued from cover to cover. Napagandang storya talaga!

3.0 out of 5 stars I Have Tasted the Sweet Mangoes of Cebu, June 25, 2006
I am about ready to retire and have been doing background research on the possiblity of moving to the Philippines. On a website recently someone recommended this book as a way to begin to understand some of the Filipino mindset.

This is an interesting book about a single man's efforts to "return to his roots" in the Philippines. The story, which at times is somewhat niave, does document the author's efforts to fall in love with a mail order bride.

The book does give one a sense of the culture and of, I believe, the innocents of the sometimes Philippine "hustle". I recomend this book if one has any interest in the culture and of the people, both in the Philippines and those in the USA.
