The British-Soviet occupation of Iran in 1941 provided Stalin with the golden opportunity to fulfill an age old dream, nurtured by Russian rulers since Peter the Great, of getting closer to the warm waters of Persian Gulf. He could not let this dream slip through his hands too easily. Consequently, we had the Azerbaijan crisis of 1946.
