Product Description

"A Composer's Notes: Remembering Miklós Rózsa" by Jeffrey Dane

A special Recollection, written to commemorate the 2007 centenary of the composer's birth on April 18, 1907.

Miklós Rózsa composed the music for nearly 100 films. In this book, the author shares his own personal remembrances of the composer, the private vignettes he witnessed, specific anecdotes, personal photos, and facsimiles of Rózsa's manuscripts. The author also presents some of the private correspondence between him and the composer over a more than 20-year period, including photographic copies of the innumerable handwritten letters and notes he received from Dr. Rózsa during the decades of their friendship. These missives outline the evolution of the camaraderie and rapport that developed between the two men, offer insight into the kind of relationship between them, and reveal features of the composer's own character. The author began his connection with Rózsa as a fan but ultimately became an earnest student first of Rózsa's film music and then of his concert music - and, eventually, a friend.

About the Author

Jeffrey Dane is a music historian and researcher. A role-model and significant influence on him during his formative years was Leonard Bernstein. He’s perceived by some as overly confrontational and thusly a real idealist, and by others as insufficiently engaged and thusly an ideal realist. Both views have merit.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST read, November 22, 2006
I grew up listening to, and collecting on LP's (remember those?), movie soundtrack music. One of my favorite composers of that time period was Miklos Rozsa. Jeffrey Dane has written a thoroughly enjoyable book, I read in in one day because I just couldn't put it down. Not only is this book a narrative of an extraordinary friendship and an insight into the delightful personality of Rozsa, but Mr. Dane includes many other musical references, anecdotes, and explainations that are sure to keep the reader engrossed and entertained. I highly recommend this book for serious music students and for just plain music lovers in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Remembering a 'friend', January 23, 2007
A very interesting book that relates about a too much unknown art: the film music,
espacially here, in Europe, precisely in France.
The opportunities to get more about Miklos Rozsa are so rare we only could get happy to read this book.
If we have to nominate one: he was the greatest film music composer !
He has been my friend for about ten years, and I have been happy to visit him at his home in 93.
