Product Description

Summer 2008 has arrived in Stockholm as young adults from around the world gather for a meeting of Youth for Peace, hoping to find solutions to the conflicts that divide them. Ghada Shafi from Palestine, Binyamin Dayan from Israel, and Mariela Fuentes, a child of the violence that wracked Nicaragua, have assumed leadership roles at the YFP meeting. Negotiations that cross language barriers and cultural differences are difficult enough, but when a Syrian participant dies mysteriously, the meeting is engulfed in distrust and fear.Magnus Torval, a Swedish detective who is also a famous international power lifter, investigates the mysterious death and associated events that threaten the YFP participants. He works closely with Mariela as the two of them confront not only difficult developments in the volatile Swedish immigrant community, but also their own past disappointments and mutual attraction. With each passing day, Mariela, Magnus, Ghada, and Binyamin see the stakes growing. They are running out of time to discover who is behind the imminent danger.A fast-paced and engrossing novel filled with multifaceted characters, Peace Corpse explores the complexity of working for peace and the tenacity and fearlessness of those who threaten it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Dandy Little Novel with a Big Message, November 29, 2009
By Grady Harp (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Charles B. Neff has mastered the way to introduce many names from many cultures and create a story that does not stumble on the difficulty of coming across words that stop the flow of a tale. He does this by the very simple idea of opening his well-written suspense book based on a cast of youths seeking world peace by listing on one page the entire cast of characters by name and by the country from which they come to the Youth for Peace conference in Stockholm. Sounds like a simple idea but it helps propel the tale of intrigue and allows the reader to appreciate the interaction not only between the well drawn characters, but also adds the suggestion that the reader can easily capture the cultural background that propels the adventure. There is a love story, a murder, and a hefty dose of espionage that makes this brief novel a pleasure to read. And the after effect of finishing this book leaves the reader with some important philosophical points about the desperate need for global understanding among all peoples - and it starts with the youth who populate this very fine book. Grady Harp, November 09

5.0 out of 5 stars Be prepared!, March 16, 2009
This time Charles Neff has drawn together an eclectic cast of characters, only one of whom is exactly who he/she seems. The chilly setting in Sweden, where the very light is ambiguous, underscores the fact that the reader must join in by always paying close attention to how the shadows are falling. And remember that love can be a treasure or a curse, or both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A mystery that will keep the pages turning, February 11, 2009
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
All too often, peace is met with violence. "Peace Corpse" tells the story of the gathering of a youth organization for the furthering of peace throughout the world, with members coming to Stockholm from all over the world to push their positive message. When one of the peace travelers is found dead, the group for peace may suddenly turn warlike, if a Swedish detective by the name of Magnus Torval can't solve the murder in time. Filled with intriguing characters, "Peace Corpse" is a mystery that will keep the pages turning.
