Product Description

Enter a world of 13 chilling stories. Inside, you'll discover:
  • In "Dead Line", Max is a horror author who writes in the dead of the night. But now that he's suffering from writer's block, no words are appearing on the page, and the ones that finally do are not even his own.
  • On Halloween, children are not the only ones who knock on doors. Ghosts from the past pay visits as well in "The Last Trick-or-Treater."
  • Memories from Vietnam are not easily forgotten. In "Atrocity," one man finds out that the past can come back to life on a lonely highway in the dead of night.
  • Jack likes to wear a clown mask, but is he supposed to be funny or scary? Pray you never have to find out in "Jack the Knife."
  • Even the most seasoned exterminator would have trouble killing the roaches living at a particular house in "Pest Control."
Enter a world where the supernatural, the macabre, and the horrific collide. It's time to dream Thirteen Nightmares.

4.0 out of 5 stars '13 Nightmares' Delivers, March 28, 2009
Dennis McDonald's recently released story collection, 13 Nightmares, delivers on the chills and thrills scale. A tagline from one of the stories is featured on the back of the book : "Horror is best written in the dark." McDonald was surely in the deepest bowels of subterranean dark when penning these tales because they will satisfy the most supernaturally starved, macabre munching, horror hound around. So sit back - do not try to get comfortable because these will keep you on the edge of your seat - and do read "13 Nightmares". The writing is quality with strong characterizations revealing a deep understanding of human nature and a masterful use of setting to add to the atmosphere of the tales. Highly recommend it for library collections on 'Oklahoma authors', short story collections, and any paranormal or horror reading needs or collections. ---Marilyn A. Hudson, MLIS, 'Review It'

5.0 out of 5 stars 13 Nightmares: Reflections of Horror, July 21, 2009
After reading Dennis' "13 Nightmares" I could not help but to reflect on my past childhood nightmares. Dennis covers the gamut of horror...and it was FRIGHTENINGLY AWESOME. Some of the chapters I did not want to quit reading, Hopefully one day he will expand a few into full length novels. This is a great page turner throughly worth every penny I spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!, July 15, 2009
Dennis McDonald's 13 Nightmares is a damn creepy book and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Each story is good in its own right, but two stood out as my favorites.

"Seesaw" is about a little girl (named Sarah!)who lives with her Auntie Marge, who is about the meanest witch with a capital B I've ever come across in a story. The sad truth is: there are a lot of Auntie Marges out there in the world. When Mr. Beasley shows up, he wants to play seesaw with the little girl. Does he mean her harm or does he have another agenda?

"Live Bait" is about fishing...but who's fishing and what are they fishing for? I enjoyed the flavor of this backwoods story of hicks and those who come up against them. Dennis adds a nice little twist to this one.

So...all in all, I highly recommend 13 Nightmares...I even read the story with the roaches (during lunch, no less). And a movie is being filmed from his story "The Last Trick-or-Treater". I can't wait to see it!
