Nothing speeds up learning like personal training from a skilled tutor. With Adobe InDesign CS3 One-on-One, you get the equivalent of private lessons with author Deke McClelland, a world-renowned expert on digital graphics and design. Deke offers you DVD video with more than two hours of professional instruction and advice to accompany the book's easy-to-follow text. The book itself includes 600 full-color images, diagrams, and screenshots to illustrate every key step.

This highly popularly learning approach is quite simple: "read the book, watch the video, do the exercise". Each chapter has corresponding video lesson that demonstrates the techniques covered. The combination of text and video instruction is uniquely effective. You proceed at your own pace and work on relevant, real-world projects as you master fundamental and advanced concepts, theories, techniques, and best practices for making the most of InDesign.

This comprehensive multimedia training solution teaches you how to:
  • Create professional-looking documents with InDesign's powerful text and graphic tools
  • Import text from a word processor, move and scale existing text frames, and check spelling
  • Use the line, pen, and geometric shape tools to draw complex graphic objects
  • Apply fill and stroke, specify process and spot colors, and design custom rules
  • Use Adobe Bridge to organize and manage your digital assets
  • Import and modify layered artwork from Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Create inline graphics and anchored objects that move automatically with your text from one page to the next
  • Create, edit, and link paragraph styles, complete with nested character styles
  • Apply a sequence of style sheets to format an entire document in one operation
  • Build object styles with embedded paragraph styles in order to format entire frames at a time
  • Use master pages to automate repeating page features
  • Automatically generate a table of contents
  • Compose a fully interactive document -- with bookmarks, hyperlinks, buttons, sounds, and movies -- and export your creation to a PDF file that can be played on most computers
Adobe InDesign CS3 One-on-One puts you on the fast track to becoming a real InDesign expert. Once you're finished, you'll use InDesign smarter, faster, more creatively, and more efficiently than you thought possible.

About the Author
Electronic publishing pioneer Deke McClelland is a popular lecturer on Adobe Photoshop and the larger realm of computer graphics and design. He has hosted the interactive "Video Workshop" CD that shipped with Photoshop Versions 7, CS, and CS2, as well as hundreds of hours of tutorial-style video training for industry leaders lynda.com and Total Training. In addition to his video work, Deke has written 84 books translated into 24 languages, with more than 4 million copies in print. One of the most award-winning writers in the technology market, Deke received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Computer Book in 1989. Since then, he has garnered more than 20 honors, including seven independent citations from the Computer Press Association. In 2002, he was inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame. In 2004 Deke created the One-on-One™ book series, which uses video, step-by-step exercises, and hundreds of full-color illustrations to provide readers with the closest thing possible to private instruction from a recognized expert. These ambitious, self-paced guides include the bestselling Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One and Adobe InDesign CS2 One-on-One. Late in 2006 Deke teamed up with vanguard online training company lynda.com to bring the One-on-One training strategy to a line of video products, beginning with Photoshop CS3 Beta One-on-One Preview, the first series available for the public beta of Photoshop CS3. In addition to the full 20-plus hour Photoshop CS3 One-on-One, his plans include Illustrator One-on-One and InDesign One-on-One. Among Deke's current lynda.com videos are Photoshop Elements 5 Essentials and the #1 ranked Photoshop CS2 Channels and Masks (available for immediate viewing at www.lynda.com/deke). Deke is an Adobe Certified Expert, a member of the PhotoshopWorld Instructor Dream Team, and a regular speaker for the Photoshop Fling cruise seminars. Deke lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and two super-powered boys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Step-By-Step Tutorials, March 5, 2008
After trying out the cheap yet disappointing, glorified user manual entitled "Indesign CS3 For Dummies", I decided to give Deke McClelland's more expensive option a try. I am thrilled with this book! If one knows nothing about InDesign, then this book is recommended to provide a jump start on using the program. The book is accompanied by a DVD which provides great video introductions to every chapter. The premise is to show the user what they'll be learning, and then walk them through each step required to obtain the results shown in the video presentation. Right away, the author instructs the reader to install the provided lesson files on their hard drive and open up InDesign. This is a "learn by doing" book and well worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional InDesign Book, Exceptional, April 16, 2008
By Daniel McKinnon (Tewksbury, MA USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
'InDesign CS3 One on One' is an outstanding book by the Adobe master Deke McClelland. Mr. McClelland follows in the footsteps of past Adobe book efforts and really nails it this time around either. With 500+ pages of content laid out on beautiful full color paper, examples jump of the pages saying TRY ME OUT!! Content is spread out into lessons, of which there are 12 in total. The flow is exceptional and the writing matches up just as well. Steps are easily laid out so the reader will have little problem knowing how, what, and why things are done the way they are. If the book alone wasn't good enough, a 3 hour DVD featuring lynda dot com tutorials comes along as well.

If you work in the publishing industry and want to learn or get better with InDesign, this is an amazing effort that will please all readers of this material. Flow, layout, writing, color, extra content, this is what all books should strive to be and Deke has done it again!

***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!, January 31, 2008
Are you a graphic design professional and design student alike that need a smart, sophisticated approach to page layout software? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Deke McClelland, has done an outstanding job of writing a self-paced book on Adobe InDesign CS3.

McClelland, begins by covering each recipe contained in this book, which is designed to help you quickly understand the problem, learn how to solve it, and find out any potential trade-offs or ramifications to help you solve your problems quickly, efficiently, and with minimal effort. Next, the author shows you how to use Adobe InDesign CS3's page layout and design software. Then, he discusses how to accelerate user productivity with loads of new features like: new Photoshop effects (including gradient feathering, inner shadows, and glows) that you can apply to objects on a page; finer transparency controls, which let you apply transparency settings independently to an object's fill, stroke, and content for more complex visual looks; numerous productivity enhancements; advanced find/change features; new table and cell styles; and, export to XHTML, and more. The author also focuses on why Adobe InDesign is no longer the industry newcomer--and, why it's a full-fledged, sophisticated program, tightly integrated with the other Adobe industry leading graphics and Web programs. He continues by examining why Adobe InDesign is the essential tool for anyone doing page layout and design. Next, the author discusses why with the release of InDesign CS3 (part of Adobe's perfectly synchronized, tightly integrated Creative Suite 3 (which now includes Photoshop CS3, Illustrator CS3, Dreamweaver CS3, and Flash CS3 Professional in the Design Premium and Web Premium packages)), that it takes its place in the design firmament! Then, he focuses on why real world Adobe InDesign CS3 offers industrial-strength and time-saving techniques for design professionals who need to start laying out, proofing, and printing pages with InDesign CS3, without missing a beat (or a deadline!) in their fast-paced production cycles. The author also discusses how design pros will find everything they need in this book to successfully master InDesign's advanced page layout tools, manage color, snippets, and use the program more efficiently. Finally, he shows you how to find complete coverage of essential features in InDesign CS3, which includ: new gradient feather, directional feather, and bevel and emboss effects; improved transparency controls; improved long document support; expanded Find/Change; and, an even more flexible and customizable user interface.

This most excellent book is ideal for beginning users who want to master the key features of this program, while readers who already have some experience with InDesign can use this book to familiarize themselves with InDesign CS3's newest features. More importantly, this book will show you how to build your InDesign expertise, one technique at a time.
