Product Description

The best children’s rooms are so much more than just a place to sleep–they provide a comfortable space for play and study, offer privacy when it’s needed, and encourage creativity or just quiet contemplation. A child’s room should also express the personality of its occupant, or occupants, in a way that celebrates their unique interests and talents.

For more than a decade Susan Salzman’s Los Angeles custom furniture design firm, Little Folk Art, has been providing furniture, accessories, and design consultations for some of the freshest children’s rooms and play spaces around. Her fanciful room designs delight not only their young occupants, but their parents as well, with bold, unexpected colors and motifs that are whimsical but never cloying. These are rooms with an attitude, as individual as the kids who inhabit them. Design cues come from sources as diverse as a child’s extensive dinosaur collection, a favorite picture book, a vintage fabric, or an antique baseball. Each room is designed to grow and evolve as the needs and interests of the child do–without requiring an exhaustive overhaul.

In Rooms to Grow In Susan Salzman also addresses some of the most common challenges parents face in furnishing a child’s room, from maximizing storage in order to minimize clutter and mess to carving individual sanctuaries out of a shared room and outfitting an infant’s room on a budget. She offers insights on creating playrooms the whole family will want to enjoy, and explains how to make the transition from nursery to toddler’s space with just a few key changes.

Full of fresh ideas that will be at home with any decor or design direction, Rooms to Grow In is a much-needed resource for parents who don’t want to compromise their own good taste while indulging their child’s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, charming book, March 20, 2002
By Jill Palumbo "jillpalumbo" (Citrus Heights, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I absolutely loved this book. I don't have little children anymore, but I really enjoyed this book. The decorating principles could apply to any age decorating - it is a classic, timeless decorating style. So much warmer and cozier than all those other books on babies and children. I recommend this book to all mothers who want a lasting, charming room for their child and to all others who just love decorating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Rooms To Grow in has Great and Timeless Designs A+, June 28, 2004
By A Customer
I absolutely love this book! One day I was watching the TV show EXTRA and saw Cindy Crawford's childrens rooms being decorated by Susan Salzman. I immediately realized that she was my absolute favorite designer for childrens spaces! She has an entire line of furniture that would make any space fabulous. Also, she always recommends adding in some personal items, so no two rooms are exactly alike. After searching the internet, I was able to find this book, "Rooms to Grow In." Needless to say, I purchased the book and could not put it down. I love the simple ideas that can be used in any room, no matter the age of the child or the budget. And for anyone who is crafty with wood, the items can be easily duplicated. In the book, she even has a section, "Rooms on A Budget" and shows step by step how to take a "flea market" dresser and change it into a fabulous dresser and changing table. I love Susan Salzman's vision of taking spaces back to what they used to be. Simple, classic and definitely timeless spaces that don't have to be changed on a yearly basis. If only all of us had that vision before we invested in "fiberboard" furniture and mass produced accessories. If you need any more examples of her fine work, simply look to the countless magazine articles that have featured her work. Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, Rosie O Donell, Lionel and Diane Ritchie, Madonna, Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have all used her services. The movie, "Father of the Bride, Part Two" nursery was all her labor of love. I love her website, www.littlefolkart.cc for more creative ideas. If you love great design, and want the best for your children, this is the book for you! Thank you Susan Salzman for sharing your passion with us!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book on decorating a kid's room, March 28, 2003
I love all of the ideas in this book. Page after page, you can implement this look to fit almost any budget. I love the romantic country look in my home, and was unsure of how I could make my kid's rooms fit into this same style while fitting their lifestyle. This book gives just that. I also loved the section on the playrooms. My daughter has grown out of her playroom and creating a craft room is a great suggestion
