Product Description

A bestseller in its original edition, The Natural Mind was Dr. Andrew Weil’s first book and the philosophical basis for all of his resulting beliefs and tenets on health, healing, and the mind. Now completely revised and updated for the twenty-first century, The Natural Mind suggests that the desire to alter consciousness periodically is an innate, normal human drive. A landmark in his career, and in America’s approach to the drug problem in general, The Natural Mind is essential reading for anyone interested in Andrew Weil’s philosophy of integrative medicine and optimum health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reading, February 10, 2007
This book presents both pros and cons of drugs and drug use, and goes in depth into altered states of consciousness and why people seek them. It is not just a book about drugs, or a journal of the author's own drug experience. It is, rather, a compelling look at human nature. Dr. Weil provides many clear examples to support the magnitude of information this book contains. This book answered a lot of questions I had, and the author simply and clearly explains that a different way of thinking, an altered state of consciousness, is not a bad thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Profound, July 16, 2007
In a Natural Mind, Dr. Andrew Weil backs up his assertion, that people take drugs in order to alter consciousness, in an eloquent and brilliant way. This book changed the way I think about drugs. Everyone needs to read this essential piece of work. It was so profound and poignant, I just couldn't believe what I was reading. A classic!

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, December 31, 2006
By S. Taylor (MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have always felt Dr Weil gave good health advice, mixing the best of conventional medicine with a lot of preventive health advice and tried and tested "alternative" therapies.

I was hoping to read an illuminating book on how we might solve the disastrous situation that the "war on drugs" has given us.

I was rather disappointed to find a book that seemed to describe his own drug experimentation, that implied that every person wishes to experiment as he did (choking themselves as a child !!???), and that relied very heavily on a rather vague concept of conciousness. It all seemed terribly self indulgent on his part.

I didn't feel that I came away any more knowledgeable about drugs or the drug problem.
