Product Description

Demonstrates the full power of GIS techniques and provides basic information on possible ecological applications. Invaluable guide for all ecologists from students to experienced researchers. Paper. DLC: Ecology.

From the Back Cover

Geographical information systems are one of the most revolutionary and important tools that have become available to ecological researchers in recent years. Many ecologists are, however, not aware of the full power of GIS techniques and are not using them to their full advantage. This new book provides basic information on the types of analyses that can be carried out using GIS, using examples of ecological applications at scales from organisms to landscapes. The full scope for linkage to related technologies, such as remote sensing, and methods such as spatially explicit modelling is also discussed. Researchers will find this an invaluable guide to applying and getting the most out of GIS techniques.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview, June 24, 2000
By William Adair (Logan, UT USA) - See all my reviews
"Geographic Information Systems in Ecology" provides a good overview of basic geographic concepts that ecologists use to analyze spatial patterns. Johnston starts out with basic GIS concepts, then moves to linear, topographic, temporal, and spatial interpolation techniques, and then wraps up with GPS concepts and basic modeling.

This is not a cookbook or how-to manual, but rather much more. Johnston's emphasis on the fundamentals holds up well, given the rapid speed with which this field is evolving. I expect that this will be an equally valuable reference 10 years from now.
