Product Description

Who were the very first people to live in Maine? Who lived, played and hunted where your home and school stand today? American Indians, of course. This book will help you discover the often neglected story of a society where the adults were the ones who played games, where dreams were taken very seriously, where your family was protected by the spirit of an animal and where thieves could steal your name. This A-Z look at Maine Indians emphasizes Indian pride, culture, skills and creativity. Includes women Indians + math problems, writing activities and questions for discussion. Free teacher's guide gives specific suggestions & instructions on how to get max educational value from this book. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars Maine Indians!: A kid's Look at Our State Chiefs, Tribes, Reservations, Powows, Lore * More, October 2, 2008
I ordered this book to use as part of a Native American-school-museum project, thinking it might be a useful resource. But I found it to be one of the worst teacher's resources I've seen yet--and I've seen quite a few.
This author almost completely eliminates one Maine tribe, the Mi'Kmaq people, and jumps back and forth using traditions and cultural elements not from any of the four Maine tribes (i.e. the use of horses--Plains & SW Indians--not northern Woodland Indians). I paid 19.95 dollars for 20 pages of large-print words and definitions, which also include many words not relative to Maine Indians. Six pages were intended to be used in the classroom as worksheets and assessments; but they were very poorly done with a rather offensive cartoon of a buckskin clad Indian child with a feathered head band as page artwork. Most of the worksheets were, again, not specific to the Maine tribes. It appears this author has crafted a series of state-specific Indian books in which she has used the same conglomeration of all American Indian tribes, rather than specialize in each region--much less each state. This book is a perfect example of those many truly poor resources available with misleading titles and content, created with little to no research and obviously to make some fast money with little effort. Don't be deceived. I would not recommend this book (or any others authored by Marsh) for anyone with a serious interest in learning about Native Americans. I am sending it back and asking for a refund.
