Grade 5-7. Luke Espinosa, 12, dreams of the day he will meet his father, a professional soccer player in Mexico, and learn the skills of the game from him. Unfortunately, that day never comes for Luke, who has to endure the humiliation of a rejection letter from his father and then face the town bully in a challenge match. Luke lives in a trailer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his single mother's difficult financial situation doesn't allow extra money for luxuries such as joining a soccer team or buying the necessary equipment. His soccer ball has come from someone's trash. Then Luke makes friends with a new student, Amelia, who was a soccer player in her former neighborhood. She is eager to gather a team of girls to help him meet his challenge. With this encouragement, he develops self-esteem in spite of adversity and a sense of humor as well. In her first novel, Little has created a fully realized character.
