From the Publisher
Sector 221-G: For the whole of Federation history, this large area of space has been controlled by the Thallonians, a cruel, militaristic race of which little is knownexcept that they rule the other races in their sector with vicious iron hand.

Now the Thallonian Empire has collapsed and the systems it once ruled are in chaos. Old hatreds are surfacing. Petty tyrants control deadly weapons. World after world is descending into disorder and self-destruction. The Federation must send a starship to help where it can and report what it finds.

That ship is the U.S.S. Excalibur, a newly refit Ambassador-class starship commanded by Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and manned by Starfleet's best and brightest, including some old friends from Star Trek: The Next Generation and some of the most dynamic new characters ever to crew a Federation starship.

Join Captain Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur as they explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gone before!

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch the house of cards topple, June 18, 1998
By A Customer
Peter David has given Star Trek fans a whole new series of fun, fantasy and excitement. Some of the characters are new, but most are ones encountered before in the Next Generation series. Don't start reading this novel without the next 3 ready! You won't be able to put them down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Star Trek, September 12, 2007
By Brent Butler (Charlotte NC) - See all my reviews
At times I've had a little trouble 'getting into' Trek or Star Wars books that don't carry forward the story of main characters.

This series completely overcame that reluctance of acceptance by establishing an interesting mix of new characters interwoven with some that you'll recognize from appearances (however brief) in the mainstream Trek series.

I've read the first six books, and they seem to get better as they go. I recently ordered the entirity of the seriers, and one that it crosses over into, "Gateways".

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start of a superior series of books, July 28, 2002
Peter David has created his own starship captain with some familiar faces in the crew. My favorite is Shelby from the episode "Best of Both Worlds". She had a relationship with the lead character, Mac. Now she's the first officer. Lots of exciting plot twists and we actually read about Jellio trying to bring them down in scandal....
