Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
YA?On a bitterly cold October evening, a truck skids across icy roads into a car that slides uncontrollably into pedestrian Bree Miller. The driver, Tom Gates, spends days helping the woman recover both at the hospital and later at her home. As they fall in love, Bree eventually tells Tom about her near-death, out-of-body experience and her recollection that she has been granted three wishes by the Being of Light she met during the episode. Once the three wishes are granted, she feels that she will die once more. Bree uses one wish as a test but the result is ambiguous, so she can't be sure if it is luck or the true power of the granted wish. It is only after her death that Tom has the hindsight to see that Bree's three wishes had been granted. Delinsky draws detailed portraits of her characters, from physical attributes to personalities. The picture-perfect, small-town Vermont setting is effectively drawn. The mystery of Bree's mother's identity adds another layer to the intriguing plot. For YAs who are fond of Lurlene McDaniel's novels, Delinsky's book is a natural progression into adult writing of the same genre.?Pam Johnson, Fairfax County Public Library, VA

From Library Journal
Simon & Schuster got its wish by convincing Delinsky to switch publishers. Fans will surely get their wish when they read another juicy Delinsky novel. And we wish we could tell you more about the plot, but Delinsky is keeping mum.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could have been good story but it stumbles at the end..., September 7, 1998
By A Customer
This is a story of a small town in Vermont with the usual spectrum of interesting characters. Bree is a small-town girl waiting for something out-of-the-ordinary to happen. Tom Gates is a guy from the big city who is about to be offered the opportunity to atone for past sins. Ms. Delinsky does a good job of showing us what small-town Vermont can be like. The ending, however, I found disappointing and trite and distasteful. The author doesn't seem to have much affection for these characters. I'd stick with some of her earlier works, like Fingerprints and Moment to Moment.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Felt Cheated, February 27, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Three Wishes (Hardcover)
Although I've enjoyed all the Barbara Delinsky novels I have read, I truly felt cheated on this one. The story was absorbing and sweet, up until the last few chapters, at which point I was thrown through a loop, given a tragic ending that I really was not expecting. The ending was so devestating that I was angry enough where I had trouble getting through the last pages. I felt angry and cheated after reading a story that begins with hope and optimism that ends quite the opposite. So, if, like me, you read for escapism and happy endings, I would not recommend you read this book. The ending destroyed everything about the story that I loved prior to the ending.

2.0 out of 5 stars Wishing for a different plot, March 23, 2006
The title and the town intreagued me, but the storyline was poor and way too much misery for an escapism novel. Think Nicholas Sparks, then take away his straight forward manner and add some purple prose and you have Three Wishes.
