Amazon.com Review

An estimated 30 million American men suffer from impotence. No wonder men rushed to the pharmacies when Viagra--the first oral medication for erectile dysfunction--hit the news. Within two weeks, it became the "fastest-selling medication in the history of medicine." Originally a cardiovascular drug that failed, researchers found that Viagra didn't make blood rush to cardiac patients' hearts, but to another organ entirely.

This book, written in a friendly, peppy style, examines the physical and psychological causes of impotence (and how to figure out which cause is yours), how Viagra works, its side effects, medications that should not be combined with it, and "kiss-and-tell" stories. An intriguing chapter looks at the possible (but not yet FDA-approved) role of Viagra for women. Psychiatrist Susan Vaughan, M.D., sings Viagra's praises--"now you can have sex when, where, and how you want it, dependably and reliably, even if you're 100 and your partner's 102"--and also questions whether the drug is "a kind of Wonderbra for men trying to defy the effects of gravity and aging." Her humor--erection and ejaculation are nicknamed "point and shoot," for example--helps lighten emotionally charged topics. Read this book if you think Viagra might have a place in your sex life. --Joan Price

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know....With wit and style!, August 25, 1998

This "how-to" book exceeds expectations. I bought it as a guide to Viagra but I was surprised to find how funny and insightful it was. It covers topics such as how impotence develops and what other treatments are available, as well as the latest on Viagra for women. It's the complete guide that will get you started or let you consider your options. What's surprising is how fun it is to read and how much it makes you relax and laugh a bit! As a psychiatrist, the author is also interested in more than just mechanics...fantasy and psychology and relationships get fair play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Things are looking up!, January 2, 2004

As one of the estimated 30 million American men that have difficulty achieving (and maintaining) an erection, I was thrilled when Viagra became available by prescription.

I had spent too many years questioning my masculinity, but when I heard about Viagra, I knew that I would no longer have to end a date prematurely because I was unable to get sexually aroused. But before I started popping the little blue pill, I wanted to learn more about Viagra. That's when I turned to, "Viagra: A Guide to the Phenomenal Potency-Promoting Drug".

This book examines the physical and psychological causes of impotence, and helps you figure out which cause is yours (my problem was actually a combination of physical and psychological). I learned about medications I shouldn't mix with Viagra, and what side effects I could expect (can a four-hour erection really be considered a "side effect"?).

Author Susan Vaughan, M.D., has written the book in a fun and informative way. She'll never make you feel inferior, and she'll remind you not to be embarrassed by your condition (remember, 30 million American men also can't get an erection). I even learned that Viagra was originally developed as a cardiovascular drug that failed (researchers found that Viagra didn't make blood rush to cardiac patients' hearts, but to another organ... if you know what I mean).

Thanks to Viagra, and Susan Vaughan's helpful book, "Viagra: A Guide to the Phenomenal Potency-Promoting Drug", now most of my dates end with an ejaculation, instead of humiliation.
