Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Once again Pike gives readers a roller-coaster ride. Carl Timmons, a high-school senior in a small California town, is troubled by the accidental death of his best friend. Trying to achieve some normalcy in his life, he is drawn into the school scavenger hunt. His team includes an old friend, his best friend's girl, her handicapped brother, and three newcomers to the town. As the hunt progresses, it takes a freakish turn with an horrific ending that leaves readers shaken but hopeful. The plot and mood move along consistently, drawing readers in and sustaining an uneasy feeling throughout. Parts of the book are very suspenseful, while others give readers a chance to catch their breath. Scant characterization at the beginning is so well done that readers will be compelled to keep reading to find out more. A skillfully woven ending clears up any questions about the characters. This quick read will appeal to teens seeking some distractions from the ordinary, and to those who are interested in the creepy, gory, gruesome, bizarre, and macabre genre. --Molly Kinney, North Dade Regional Library, Miami, FL

5.0 out of 5 stars Definetly worth reading, December 31, 2002

(REAL NAME)
I think I have read all of Pike's books that are still in print and he is my favorite author. I love to read horror and mysteries and that's what he writes. Not to mention he has amazing details. Scavenger Hunt was one of my favoirtes.

The book opens in a church where a frantic boy tells the story of his day to a fairly disbeliving preist.

Carl, Cessy, Tom, Tracie, Rick, Paula and Davey are just a few seniors whose class is having a scavenger hunt. Carl just lost his best friend Joe and Tom is his only other really good friend since.

The scavenger hunt has weird rules and weird clues. But no one seems to think it as anything odd. They are all just happy to be having fun and not be in school.

Soon things get even weirder. Carl notcies that apart from his group Tracies group is the only other one they've seen since about the second clue.

Before they can stop it they are thrown into a deadly game. A Scavenger Hunt where they are the scavengers prey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read!!, July 12, 2002

As a person who is 30-something years old I was looking for a change of pace from the "mature adult" sci-fi and fantasy books I normally read.
I found this little treasure in the young adult section of one of my used books stores and am sold that Christopher Pike is definitely worth a few more tries.

Great book! On section was truely suspensful and very little could be guessed as I read through the book. This left the end as a nice suprise. A great sense of building tension and mystery in what appears to be a totally innocent event but turns into something so much more.

SPOILER...Pike doesn't ever really tell you about the "bad guys" and what their origins are yet the story seemed totally believable in the midst of so many questions that needed answering. Great job Pike!

4.0 out of 5 stars Creepy!, November 16, 1999
By A Customer
This book certainly is one of Pike's scariest, although it is by no means the one that makes the most sense. I found it a tiny bit farfetched, but who cares, as long as there's blood spilled, right? Besides, I have an open mind. The chapter about Tracie breaking into Mr. Patridge's house really got me trembling. Pike has a way of putting words together that plunges the reader into his book. No, more like pulls the characters into real life and scare the reader out of his skin. A great book.
