1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this, May 23, 2000
By Robert M Allen (Sahuarita, AZ) - See all my reviews
The book speaks of being up to date with DOS 3.2, and advanced users with Windows 3.1, hard drives of super size 250 Meg. Gimme a break. Why are they still selling this outdated book? Far from being an introduction to networks, the writer quickly plunges into complex subjects far beyond the scope of an introduction, leaving the reader wondering what is happening. The only thing this book indicates is that the author was employed in the computing field and that the author is neither a writer nor an instructor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" book if you're just diving in to Networking., January 14, 1998
By A Customer
Before I picked up this book, I knew nothing about computer networks and their associated jargon. Although slightly outdated (no discussion of Windows NT), this book walks you through networking fundamentals, plus gives a very good overview of the top NOS's (Networking Operating Systems) from the late 80's and early 90's. It really helped to prepare me for another good book, "Networking Essentials", and is a "must have" if you want to learn anything at all about how and why network systems function. I'd reccomend this book to anyone interested, in a heartbeat. (J. Lipscomb)

2.0 out of 5 stars Decent, but outdated, December 9, 1997
By A Customer
A decent survey of networking issues, especially from the LAN (as opposed to WAN) viewpoint, but drastically in need of upddating. Lacks discussion of newest versions of NT and Novell, as well as contemporary implementations of Fast Ethernet and Switched Ethernet. Still a decent concerptual read for the beginner, but far from informative regarding the most current technologies.
