5.0 out of 5 stars Good Overview, July 20, 2001
By Stephen Lee (Singapore) - See all my reviews

The book lists the most important concepts you will need to navigate the Linux shell and about the kernel, and how to get help as and when you need it.

Simple, precise and clear, this book is great if you need to get your feet wet as to what Linux is all about. The sections are also compactly presented, with just enough to get an inkling of what Linux can do for you. The only section which needs updating is the part on distros--it may be outdated, with Mandrake and TurboLinux not mentioned. However, with Linux's growing popularity, things can change pretty fast, and Ray gives a URL to go to if more info is needed.

I liked it so much that I went on to read more serious stuff, and got certified with LPI and SAIR/GNU. I'm now waiting for the next available exam date for my RHCE!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT tool!, July 31, 1999
I am a beginner, and, being the semi-paraniod person that i am, i went to this site and ordered several linux books to start me off. While i found some of the 1,000 page tomes useless, with poor indexes and hard-to-understand writing, this little book came in very handy. It taught me everything i need to know, and has a great index.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "starting Point" book, September 25, 2000
By Frank Kinser (Chattanooga, TN) - See all my reviews

I was looking for a book my 13 year old son could use to get started in Linux and this book filled the need perfectly! Linux was already installed and he just needed a book to get him started using Linux on a day to day basis.

For those that want to get to work in Linux immediately, this is the book for you. Then, you can start getting deeper into Linux with books like "Linux In A Nutshell" and "UNIX Powertools"

A "user unfriendly" book for the beginner, and too unorganized for the intermediate user to keep as reference material.
