Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
For professional Web developers working with Microsoft Internet Information Server, Active Server Pages (ASP) is the technology that makes sophisticated sites possible. Aimed at this audience, Active Server Pages 2.0: Unleashed is a productive tool for making use of the many benefits ASP offers. Coverage includes building custom components, scriptlets, working with transactions, DNA, CDO, and ADO.

This updated edition illustrates how to make the most of ASP 2.0 through a solutions-based approach that uses concise "how-to" examples coupled with code on a companion CD-ROM. The book includes three complete sample applications: an online store, an online job site, and a discussion forum site. The complete code for each application is included on the CD-ROM, and dedicated chapters walk the reader through how it works. The book also includes an ASP FAQ section, as well as ASP, VBScript, and SQL language references.

You should have a solid understanding of Web server and HTML basics before you launch into this title--it's geared toward advanced Web site development. For Microsoft-based Web programmers, however, this is a must-have text. --Stephen W. Plain

Topics covered: Standard ASP objects, database access, distributed applications, integration with Microsoft Transaction Server, plus a section on ASP performance tweaking.

Product Description
Active Server Pages 2.0 Unleashed has been completely revised to answer the needs of the intermediate/advanced ASP 2.0 user. The book has been refocused to provide detailed coverage of the core concepts within ASP as well as more advanced topic coverage. Topic coverage will include in depth coverage of the ASP objects as well as topics such as building custom components, scriptlets, working with transactions, DNA, CDO, ADO, and more. Each chapter stands on its own so that you can focus on the topics you are currently interested in. To help you get the most out of each chapter, examples will be presented that contain functionality used in real-world Web applications. This will allow you to port the code to your own applications quickly and easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST ASP BOOK, December 2, 1999
Undoubtedly it is one of the best books available on ASP. It gives you complete understanding of what ASP is all about. It can start you going right away, you can build your own website once you go through this book. It gives you an indepth knowledge about ASP and it also deals with COM in ASP, (though not in depth).A must for Novices and Intermediates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for a big topic, August 23, 1999
I like how the book points out alternative approaches to achieving a goal, as well as offering advice on when to choose one path versus another. There are some annoying grammar errors (since when is "outputted" a word? Lots of nits like this throughout), but my experience is that its next to impossible to find high-quality editing in tech books...traditional editors must just get lost in technical jargon and give up. For an experienced programmer, the book is an easy read, and covers a whole lot of ground. Unlike some of the other large tech books I've read, this one isn't bloated...I found virtually every section useful. I would have preferred to see the scripting focus more on Java Script and less on VB Script, but that's just personal preference. Most programmers can easily translate between the two in their head. If you're a programmer, and you only want to buy one book on ASP, I would choose this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners!, March 7, 2000

(REAL NAME)
Although it's not the only ASP book I have, it's the one I return to again and again. This book is for people who who need the basic nuts and bolts explained so that they can begin to think more like a programmer. It would seem some reviewers of this book are more interested in proving how much they know, rather than giving this book the credit it deserves. It's well written..not too techy, but not a 'For Dummies' either. A great first book to get involved with making ASP pages.
