4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview of what some science is ignoring - very interesting, August 21, 2009
This was an interesting book, and better than most TV/Film tie-in books. It's clearly linked to the X-Files, but brings more than just merchandising for a quick dime. Essentially, this book (and Volume 2) has a chapter on each topic of the paranormal brough up in X-Files episodes. You don't have to have seen the actual episodes (though you may enjoy reading the chapters more if you have), as the chapters deal with examples of similar phenomenon occurring throughout the world, and history.

What helps this book is the details it gives (with each chapter ending in a bibliography to read more), and the fact that scientific views both for and against are given voice. Some of the chapters actually end up with the conclusion that the phenomenon is, in fact, disproven. But, there is much here to enforce my belief that there is way more to this world than what we think we know.

The last part of the book is a short, interesting article from 3 professionals discussing some of the topics in the book in an overview. This book reminded me of the enjoyment I got when I was in middle school of reading about ghost sightings, UFO's, man-eating plants, etc., and wanting more (those younger audience books never gave much evidence, or interviews, and certainly no bibliography for further reading like this one has). This book is like a grown up, more mature version.

QUICK NOTE: In terms of the actual binding of this book (and Volume 2), over 50% of the pages, during reading, fell out. The glue used to hold the pages did not hold up over time (I purchased these from a Borders back in the early 2000's). Pretty annoying, but I think I'll hole-punch them and put it in a binder for reference (maybe delete the sections I didn't like).

5.0 out of 5 stars book, May 10, 2008
The book open some stuff that I was wondering about in the show. And opened more door about the show to wonder about.
