Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

PW praised the "exquisite drawings in this luminous documentation of a pumpkin's evolution; "the quality is breathtakingly soft and expressive." Ages 4-8.
Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2 Softly colored pencil illustrations in a realistic style effectively communicate Jamie's pride as a very young gardener. He plants a seed, then grows and harvests a pumpkin from which he saves seeds for next year. The large, detailed drawings capture Jamie's anticipation and pleasure just right. The garden creatures appearing on every page and grandpa, whom we catch sight of now and then, are a delightful supporting cast. Nonreaders can easily follow the story in pictures alone. Very large, clear print on facing pages makes the simple narrative inviting for beginning readers, too. Libraries serving young children shouldn't miss this satisfying book in the tradition of Ruth Krauss and Crockett Johnson's The Carrot Seed (Harper, 1945) and Bijou Le Tord's Rabbit Seeds (Four Winds, 1984). The strong sense of the cycles of nature and a youngster's accomplishment make for a winning combination. Anna Biagioni Hart, Sherwood Regional Lib . , Alexandria, Va.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisitely illustrated story of a boy's pumpkin-growing joy, October 31, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Pumpkin Pumpkin (Hardcover)
Jamie begins his pumpkin-growing experience with a single
pumpkin seed. The seedling is craftily illustrated in the shaped of the first letter of his name,"J".
As the plant grows and produces a pumpkin, the author/illustrator reveals the relationship of its size to Jamie's. He eventually is able to sit on his pumpkin. Jamie carries his pumpkin in a red wagon,
makes his own home-grown jack-o-lantern, and caringly saves enough seeds for next year's pumpkin.

Ms. Titherington's simply worded text is beautifully enhanced by the large, detailed, dreamlike illustrations. A must read for all junior pumpkin lovers, their parents and teachers.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the children I've read this too loved it.!, September 16, 2003
By Roxanne (PA United States) - See all my reviews
I got this book many years ago, when I took care of a class of 4 year olds. They loved this book and read the book with me. Now that I have a child of my own (almost 2 years old) it is his favorite book. I read it sometimes 10 times a day and it has wonderful illustrations. I never tire of it and am looking to buy more of Jeanne Titherington's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers, October 13, 2002
By Working Mum (Cuneo, CN Italy) - See all my reviews
I teach English to a fifth grade that had very little instruction in the past. I gave this book to three girls and they could understand the meaning of words using the picture clues. One of them had never heard the word pumpkin before, let alone sprout or seed. Now they all have a better vocabulary. Last year I read the same book to a first grade that did not have English classes. I used the story to teach plant growth and sequence concepts. The year before I had also used it to teach subtraction and backward counting - Jamie saved 6 seeds. He plants one. He still has 5, and so on.
I don't teach Italian, but I am sure I would find a way to use this wonderfully illustrated book, if I had to.
