Product Description

Designed by Tim Shaner and lavishly illustrated throughout with nineteenth-century artwork, this book will remind you of the origins of Christmas, the roots of modern celebration, and the current significance of the holiday in each of our lives. There have been many successful Christmas titles before The Little Big Book of Christmas, but none so complete, timeless, and delightful, and none in such a beautifully designed format. A great big fat international Christmas book chock-full of stories, songs, biblical verse, Christmas lore, and the best recipes ever, including:

Gospel stories, including those of St. Luke and St. Matthew

Poetry of William Shakespeare, John Milton, Robert Frost, Clement Clarke Moore, Ogden Nash, W. H. Auden, and Lewis Carroll

Stories from Louisa May Alcott, Hans Christian Andersen, Charles Dickens, O. Henry, Langston Hughes, Norman Vincent Peale, Lincoln Steffens, and Selma Lagerlof

Christmas lore from Dorothy Thompson, Norman Vincent Peale, and Francis P. Church

Carols galore including "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Silent Night," "The First Noel," "Joy to the World," and "The Twelve Days of Christmas"

The best holiday recipes, including New England Eggnog, Classic Sugar Cookies, Hot Chocolate with Peppermint Sticks, A Brownie Christmas Tree, Swedish Gingerbread Cookies, Refrigerator Cookies, and Scandinavian Glogg.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Christmas Lover's Complete Guide To Reading, November 24, 2001
By Antoinette Klein (Hoover, Alabama USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When the Thanksgiving turkey has been cleared from the table, the reader in me immediately starts thinking about great Christmas stories to plunge into for the month of December. How happy I was to find the greatest stories I remembered from the past plus great new discoveries had all been gathered into one book. Not only the best stories and poems, but magnificent artwork, yummy new recipes to try, and carols for family sing-a-longs. This book has it all for an uplifting, feel-good Christmas reading experience.

So make yourself a cup of hot chocolate with pepperment sticks (recipe, page 198) and enjoy "A Miserable, Merry Christmas" by Lincoln Steffens(page 210), one of my favorite new discoveries in this volume. Or if you have small children, don't let the season pass without reading them "Christmas Every Day" by William Dean Howells" (page 226) or the classic "Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus" (page 178) by Francis P. Church.

You'll want a copy for yourself and one to give your favorite reading buddy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas Treasure Trove, November 4, 2002
By Terrie (Little Chute, WI USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I love all of Lena Tabori's "Little Big Books", especially the Valentines and Halloween ones, but this Christmas one is my favorite of all. This book is a "must have" for reading to children during the Yuletide season and is a wonderful (and necessary) indulgence for oneself as well. The illustrations have been gleaned from the charming Victorian art of a bygone day and archive the simple, cozy Christmas traditions for us to recover with the turn of a page. 11 Poems, 13 carols with music, 21 stories, 14 recipes, and over 200 illustrations including 55 full color 19th century images make up this delightful volume. You will see the writing of Robert Frost, Louisa May Alcott, Kenneth Grahame, O. Henry, Ogden Nash, William Shakespeare and many others. Read stories from the Bible and also from the pen of beloved First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
I think this book would be worth having for the holiday recipes alone. I have tried several and I found each one that I tried delicious. There are blueprints for a gingerbread house and perfect Snow Icing directions. Don't miss the Vermont Whiskey Cake or Napa Valley Apple Cranberry Crisp.
Open up this treasure trove after all the Thanksgiving dishes are done and take a treasure or two out each day. I think you'll enjoy the whole season that much more as a result!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Christmas present - and order an extra for yourself, October 10, 2004
Nostalgic, fun Christmas presents come no better. The assortment of stories, music, and pictures contained in this book cover a huge scope. It is just the sort of book to snuggle with as one nurses a toddy and enjoys the scent of pine.
