Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Notches-Unknown PBJ," "Gone Fishin' Fish Sticks," "Pokey Brownies," "Make-Lots-of-Friends Oven-Baked French Fries." Even the pickiest eaters will perk up their ears at these irresistible dishes from acclaimed chef and TV personality Emeril Lagasse. Packed with 75 fun, tasty, and even healthy recipes, the New Orleans chef's cookbook for kids is sure to inspire feats of culinary greatness in the youngest aspiring epicure. The big, colorful volume features clear, step-by-step instructions with a strong emphasis on safety, preparation, cleanliness, and fun. Sidebars provide the yield, ingredients, and tools needed for each recipe, and small pictures illustrate some of the trickier steps, demonstrating, for example, how to brush the "Cheesy Star Snacks" with egg white before baking. A prominently placed Caution bar at the top of the page uses icons (knife, flame, oven mitt, etc.) to let young cooks know how careful they need to be. The exuberant chef sprinkles his well-known Emerilisms--"kick it up," "oh yeah, baby," "bam!"--throughout the pages, and clever illustrations by Charles Yuen use photos of Emeril's head with cartoonish drawings of his body and the foods he celebrates. Grownup readers who have enjoyed Emeril's other cookbooks (Prime Time Emeril, etc.) will love sharing their favorite wacky chef--and some kitchen time--with the kids in their lives. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly

The host of his own show on the Food Network, chef Emeril Lagasse gets kids into the kitchen with recipes such as "Grill-It-Up-a-Notch Ham and Cheese Sandwich" (a dash of dijon and honey, plus a slice of gruyere, make all the difference), "Baby Bam Burgers" (he beefs up the meat with onions, garlic, etc.) and "Oh-Yeah-Baby Glazed Carrots" included in Emeril's There's a Chef in My Soup!: Recipes for the Kid in Everyone, illus. by Charles Yuen. The oversize volume contains 75 recipes with clear instructions and illustrations built around Emeril's humorous headshots; easy-to-read icons designate cooking considerations, including difficulty levels (almost all require some adult supervision).

4.0 out of 5 stars An "OK" kids cookbook, April 1, 2002
By "dmkc" (Springfield, OH USA) - See all my reviews
I bought the cookbook mainly for myself ( I am Emeril fan), wanting to use it with my daughter when she wanted to be in the kitchen with me. The recipes are really just his "regular stuff", meaning he didn't change anything to make them more desirable for children except for the names of the recipes (ie: Baby Bam Burgers, Little Mean Turkey Loaf, Broccoli with Seriously Cheesy Sauce, etc.) Only the names make them more desirable to children. Real pictures of the food are not included - they are simply colorful drawings that look real nice. My 7-year-old prefers real pictures of the food so she knows what she's going to be eating - so do I. In all, I like the book for myself to add to my Emeril collection, but my daughter has other kid's cookbook's that she prefers over this one. It's an "OK" kids cookbook. It was a nice attempt at a kids cookbook (the recipes ARE good) but I would reccommend going to the library and borrowing the book before deciding to buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook for older children, April 3, 2002
By A Customer
I have already tried a few of the recipes. They are easy to follow and delicious. I especially enjoy using the "Baby Bam" to kick things up a notch for my son.

He's a little too young to appreciate this book yet, but he sure loves Emeril's chicken nuggets and french toast!

This book really reads well -- you can just hear Emeril talking out loud as you read these recipes. Unlike some cookbooks, this one seems really thorough. I have read all of the recipes and there don't seem to be any missing steps. Everything is carefully explained so young cooks will know what they are doing.

A really great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars FUN AND DELICIOUS...KICKED UP A NOTCH!, January 3, 2003
My 9-year-old daughter got this 5 days ago as a Christmas gift. She is interested in cooking and enjoys watching Emeril on TV, so I thought she'd like it. Wow! I think it is the most-used favorite so far of all her gifts! She's already made about 4 of the recipes, with another planned for tonight(I've borrowed it since then as well). They are easy to make and delicious, and I myself prefer it to Emeril's other cookbooks because, while the dishes may not be as sophisticated, the ingredients are usually things found already at home or are easy to pick up at the store (his "adult" recipes often call for more exotic things that are not always easy to come by outside Louisiana!). It also explains things more thoroughly. It is fun to spend time with her, "assisting"; and she's having fun and learning a lot at the same time. Often, it is difficult to get my daughter to sit still long enough to read a book...well, she pored over this one diligently the first night, reading the anecdotes and cooking tips (which are excellent too)! She is becoming quite the chef, and as a family we love the dishes she cooks(especially my very picky 4 year old)! They get a kick out of using the "Baby Bam" just like Emeril! Highly recommended!
