Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-6-A collection of 72 poems illustrated with black-and-white cartoons. It is divided into sections that include verses about parents, sibling rivalry, school, food, tall tales, creatures, and nonsense. About one third of the selections are "Anonymous" verses such as "God Gave Out Noses" and "I See London" and those by children's poets who specialize in sassy humor such as Jack Prelutsky and Shel Silverstein. The other two thirds are published here for the first time, including nine by Lansky himself. Most feature simple rhymed couplets and some suffer from uneven rhyme and meter. Because most of these poems rely on subjects such as underwear, bathroom humor, and body noises for their appeal, they will likely be popular with young readers. Libraries needing to flesh out their humorous poetry collections may find this useful, and teachers and school librarians will find it a surefire addition for reluctant readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars One Funny Book, April 23, 1999
By A Customer
My favorite poem is Swimming Ool. I like that poem because it is funny. A boy says, "Now the pool is a 'swimming Ool' because I took a P". When the boy takes a "p", a girl is swimming under the water and her eyes get very ''BIG''. I would give this book five stars. This is a good book for ages 5 and up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boys love it!, August 2, 2006
By 4theboys (Springfield, TN) - See all my reviews
I have four young boys who love this book. They enjoy a variety of poem books, including classics, but they always come back to this one. I'll admit that not every poem is all that funny, but most are very silly and good for a laugh. My boys each have their own personal favorites and even my 4 year old will look at the funny illustrations and giggle because it reminds him of something funny he heard us read. I was amazed to find my six and eight year olds reading several pages to friends during a recent sleepover.

5.0 out of 5 stars a favorite book in my classroom, December 27, 2001
By A Customer
My second graders have tried every day to beat each other to the poetry book box at quiet reading time, and this is the first choice book. Yes, Silverstein and Prelutsky are favorites too, but this one is fun and accessible to so many of them. They copy poems to take home, they'll giggle incessantly while reading. They're reading and enjoying themselves -- what more could I ask?
