From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8ACelou, 12, is the daughter of a French trapper and his Shoshone wife. One day when her father is away at a trading rendezvous, Crow Indians kidnap the girl's mother and brothers. Celou must use all of her training and skills to follow the raiding party and rescue her family. This exciting adventure story also conveys information about the Shoshone Indians and their customs. Unfortunately, the sentimental, old-fashioned cover misleadingly implies a placid content. Also, unfamiliar terms used in the text are not defined and there is no pronunciation guide. Still, this fast-paced story features a strong female heroine. Fans of the "American Girl" (Pleasant) and "Dear America" series (Scholastic) should enjoy it.AAnn W.
