Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Successful Bonsai Growing is a brief introduction giving information on raising bonsai from seed, cuttings, and nursery stock, supplemented with numerous photographs and drawings. Sections on pruning, wiring, pest control, and general care are written for new hobbyists. Specific advice on handling the more common species is also included. Although the prespective is British (suggestions of clubs to join list only those in England), it still serves as a good introduction to the field. For those seeking more than a general introduction, the Meyer book will serve well. While it lacks line drawings and does not have the quality of photographs of Adams's book or Peter Chan's somewhat more expensive Bonsai Masterclass ( LJ 8/88), its clear and topical arrangement of hundreds of practical tips is very useful. Meyer discusses soil, winter protection, display, and indoor bonsai in greater depth than the other books. Sections on training, fertilizing, collecting from the wild and advice on specific species include information for both beginning and advanced bonsai artists. Peter C. Leonard, Carnegie Lib. of Pittsburgh
