5.0 out of 5 stars Studies on the Unconscious , December 21, 2008
By BYF "Backyard Flix" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
From back cover:

"The essay is a philosophical study of the concept of unconscious mental activity, and more particularly of that concept as Freud developed it in his formative early writing.

No part of psychological theory has struck the lay imagination more forcibly than the concept of the Unconscious, and yet nowhere are misunderstanding and confusion more likely to arise. There is therefore room for an attempt at clarification, for an enquiry which will seek to discover what it means to assert the existence of the Unconscious rather than an assessment of the empirical grounds for such an assertion.

But this task of clarification necessitates both some discussion of the nature of psychological theory and an exploration of some of the problems raised by our ordinary, pre-Freudian view of the mind. The argument thus comprises an attack on certain philosophical problems as well as an elucidation of a key psycho-analytic concept."
