Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Earthquakes and Geological Discover describes how and whv scientists trace seismic activirv and measure the extent and patterns of seismic waves. Through analvsis of numerous earthquakes, both historical a'nd present, eminent seismologist Bruce Bolt illustrates that basic geological lessons are learned in almost even, occurrence of these highly varied events. In addition, Bolt shows how seismographic data are used to mitigate the risk of future earthquakes by incorporating the latest theoretical models, technologies, and techniques (including manmade earthquakes). Bolt describes the three-pronged effort to predict the occurrence of earthquakes-the search for warning signs, the review of patterns of past occurrences, and the measurement of the strain on faults. fle concludes bv focusing on the crucial challenge of predicting the intensity of ground shaking, demonstrating how an understanding of seismic intensity leads to the construction of safer buildings and to other measures that reduce an earthquake's potential for destruction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner or advanced student of geology., September 25, 2004

(REAL NAME)
I am not a geology student officially but I have always loved to read about the subject and this book satisfies me on all levels. It is good for leisurely reading, and it is good for a good detailed study of the subject. The author is not a dry writing, sterilized scientist. He has a real flair for keeping the reader interested.

In addition to earthquakes, much of this reference provides a review of the Earth's geological features such as rift valleys and continental drift.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally Interesting, June 13, 2000
By su pak "ricekooky" (United States) - See all my reviews
This book explained everything and more about the things I ever wanted to know about eaarthquakes. I've picked this book up for my research on eathquakes, and believe me this book had everything. The facts are well presented and the best part was that this book wasn't boring at like the other informative books.
