Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
If you're unsure how your knowledge of SQL Server 7 stacks up against the subjects you have to comprehend to pass the Administering Microsoft SQL Server 7 exam (exam 70-028), you'll appreciate the highly structured approach that MCSE Readiness Review Exam 70-028: Administering Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 takes. Jill Spealman organizes her book around the six knowledge "domains" outlined in Microsoft's specification of test objectives. Though she does present a small amount of introductory text with each domain and subdomain, this book emphasizes practice questions and so represents a great way to gauge the alignment of your knowledge with the skills Microsoft requires you to have.

The questions are competent, but the way this book presents their answers is its real strength. Typically, you'll find a question on a right-hand page, where you can study it and the multiple answers at length. On the other side of the same page, you'll find the question reprinted with annotated answers below. The annotations are great--Spealman explains why the wrong answers are wrong and why the correct answers are correct (sometimes she'll refer you to the right answer as a way of explaining the wrong answer, but generally she annotates the answers individually).

MCSE Readiness Review Exam 70-028: Administering Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 would be a better book if the author had included more questions on each topic, since many of the objectives Microsoft specifies are addressed by only a single question. A companion CD-ROM includes a quiz program. Though not adaptive (and though it makes reference to books other than this one), the program asks questions different from those presented in the written text. --David Wall

Topics covered: Planning for a SQL Server 7 installation (both as an upgrade and as a fresh installation), initial configuration, user management, basic Transact-SQL, security, monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Use this book as a reference guide only, October 7, 1999
This book is well organized. I used the book as a reference guide to tap into SQL Server 7.0 's Book Online. Don't depend on any single reference book on the market to pass your 70-028 exam. Your most authoritative source is the Book Online. This book made me to get familiar with the Book Online, and helped me passed the exam.

3.0 out of 5 stars MCSE Readiness Review Administratering SQL Server 7.0, December 4, 1999
By A Customer
Exam Questions are more complicated. The questions in this book are "way too easy" and are nothing like what is on the exam!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cases an pattern of questions, January 10, 2000
By "jimfig" (San Jose, Costa Rica, Central America) - See all my reviews
This book allowed me to pass the 70-028 exam successfuly. The combination of questions and cases presented in this book are very accurate to the exam. During the exam, just reading the question and identifying the pattern with a question on the book was very often, that allowed me to save significant amount of time. In particular I believe that the Troubleshooting area is where this books really shines. I only whish the book had even more cases. I certainly recommend this book as a valid way to check your readiness before you take the exam.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not terribly helpful . . .
I knew this book inside and out, but I still failed the test. The practice exam questions in this book look NOTHING like the questions on the actual exam. Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars caution
The book helps with the design of the real test but I did not feel the content of the book nor the practice exams were sufficient for passing.
