Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
The Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Administrator's Companion stands as the documentation of record for Microsoft's flagship e-mail and collaboration server product--short of programming. If you don't find here the Exchange 2000 Server information that you need, you pretty much can give up on printed documentation, and head right for the newsgroups.

Assuming familiarity with the Windows 2000 Active Directory infrastructure on which Exchange 2000 Server relies heavily, this book isn't intended as an introductory guide for Exchange Server newcomers. Instead, it's a definitive reference book for administrators who have complicated systems in place, or specific plans to create them. It includes explicit procedures here and there, but sections mainly aim to point you toward the parts of the program that have to do with given capabilities and phenomena--the authors direct readers to the Exchange objects tree when it's time to establish policies, for example. "Real World" sidebars aren't case studies, but instead vehicles for focusing on Exchange 2000 Server's mechanisms for dealing with imperfection (as in a mail environment that includes both Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 5.5, or a network that sometimes delays heartbeat signals).

This book is a no-kidding weighty tome that roving consultants might not want to haul around. For situations like theirs, Microsoft Press publishes a book that's far smaller and equally excellent, if narrower in scope: Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Administrator's Pocket Consultant. --David Wall

Topics covered: Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, explained for the benefit of people who administer or deploy it. The authors explain how the server stores and moves messages, and integrates with the Windows 2000 infrastructure. Lots of attention goes to configuration of users, groups, and folders. Features--chat, instant messaging, and integration with the Windows 2000 public-key management capabilities--get covered, too, as do administrative chores, like backup and performance tuning.

Product Description
Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server is a comprehensive messaging platform that enables the widest possible range of collaborative solutions. Exchange 2000 builds on the powerful messaging and collaboration features that have made Exchange popular, and includes significant design changes that improve scalability, manageability, and integration. MICROSOFT EXCHANGE 2000 SERVER ADMINISTRATOR'S COMPANION is the IT implementer's guide to deploying and maintaining Exchange 2000 Server. Topics covered include Outlook Web Access and SMTP, Chat Service and Instant Messaging, plus integration with Microsoft Windows(r) 2000 Server Active Directory services and Microsoft Outlook(r) 2000. The companion CD-ROM includes a fully searchable electronic version of the book, and white papers by Exchange experts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic !, October 9, 2000
By A Customer
I have really enjoyed this book, but I think those new to Exchange and messaging systems might find it overwhelming. It does assume a general knowledge of Exchange Server 5.5 and Windows 2000. I would definitely recommend reading a book on Windows 2000/Active Directory first as this knowledge is crucial to the understanding of Exchange 2000. However, those familiar with Exchange 5.5 and Win2K will find this book extremely valuable. Even newcomers to Exchange will find the detailed hands on descriptions of daily administration tasks very helpful.

I've been specializing in Exchange Server 5.x deployments for about two years now and this book was just what I needed to get me up to speed fast with Exchange Server 2000. The book is big, but it's organized quite well so it's easy for you to just read the chapters about the topics you want whenever you like. It's also written very well, easy to read and won't put you to sleep like some other Microsoft offerings. I just got started reading it today and couldn't put it down. I ended up knocking off over 300 pages by days end ; also having successfully installed Exchange 2000 on my home network, configured Internet Mail ( SMTP, POP3 and OWA ), Recipients and Recipient Policies, Storage Groups, Public Folders, etc, etc. Tommorrow, I hope to finish the chapters on Security, Disaster Recovery, Clustering, Routing Groups and Connectors. I think by then I will be ready for most any Exchange 2000 deployment !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Beginners or Advanced users, September 18, 2000
By Roland Kissoon "Rolls" (Trinidad and Tobago, West Indies) - See all my reviews

Superb book that deals with both practical aspects ( planning, installation, security etc.), and concepts. It is written in a very detailed manner, which at first was quite frustrating to read, but is very useful for sections that I was unfamiliar with. This is an excellent guide for people that are familiar with Exchange 5.X. I was particularly impressed with the sections on client installations and selection. I learnt a lot of stuff that I did not even know were possible with MS Exchange. Good buy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book!, September 7, 2000
By Mike Rogers (Dallas, TX) - See all my reviews
I always worry about books that come out so soon after (or even before) the actual product, but this book is great! It provides a good overview of the Exchange 2000 architecture and its integration with Windows 2000. The book also provides hands-on knowhow on everything from installation to configuring advanced security and performance tuning. I'd recommend it to anyone involved with Exchange 2000.
