Editorial Reviews

Product Description

As the community of administrators using Microsoft TCP/IP matures, your need for reliable, technically focused information will increase. This revision updates the successful previous edition with real-world implementation advice using the latest TCP/IP advances, approaching these topics from the perspective of the true networking professional. Windows 2000 TCP/IP will cut through the complexities and provides the most informative and complex reference book on Windows-based TCP/IP topics. This book is a tutorial-reference hybrid, focusing on how Microsoft TCP/IP works, using hands-on tutorials and practical examples. Concepts essential to TCP/IP administration will be explained thoroughly, then related to the practical use of Microsoft TCP/IP in a serious network environment. This book begins with coverage of TCP/IP architecture and advanced installation and configuration issues, then moves on to cover routing with TCP/IP, DHCP management, WINS/DNS name resolution, dynamic DNS..

From the Inside Flap

"I was very impressed. I am one of the few people who has been working with TCP/IP for nearly 15 years, and I was amazed at both the depth of the discussion and the clarity of the presentation.

"Network administrators who need to keep up with Microsoft's rush to achieve the Windows.net vision can use this book both as a tutorial and as a reference on Microsoft's TCP/IP implementation. Dr. Siyan's many years of experience with both Microsoft operating systems and IETF standard TCP/IP are evident as he pulls the two together into a single, seamless reference."

-Jim Ryan, MCSE, President, Ninjah Blue Networks

"This is one of the finest TCP/IP references I have been privileged to read. It does a exceptional job of giving comprehensive and up-to-date coverage in a concise and easy-to-understand writing style. The author has engineered this book for easy location and mastery of each topic: each chapter stands independently from others so that you can research a topic quickly without having to read the preceding chapters. In addition, the in depth discussions about topics like diagnostic tools for Microsoft networks, CP/IP configuration, and TCP/IP protocols infrastructure make this book an invaluable reference for network administrators and computer programmers."

-Matthew Clower, Computer Programmer

"Windows 2000 TCP/IP will undoubtedly assist any computer professional in understanding TCP/IP as a whole and how it relates to specific operating systems and other software. This well-written book is suited both for the seasoned professional and the beginner/intermediate reader. Windows 2000 TCP/IP does an excellent job in breaking down difficult topics, goes into detail on a wide variety of key administration issues, and provides advice to troubleshooting a number of internetworking issues. This text will be an invaluable reference for IT professional who wishes to understand the inner workings of TCP/IP and how it works in a variety of environments."

-Mark A. Linsenbardt, MCSE, MCDBA, MCT, CTT

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent TCP/IP Instruction and reference, August 27, 2000
I had the pleasure of writing a review for the inside flap of this book, and would like to add to it here.

TCP/IP is an excellent book for anyone looking to learn TCP/IP as it is integrated and expanded upon for Windows 2000. It also servers as an excellent piece of reference material; everything is layed out in a manner in which information can be found quickly. This book covers all of the major topics dealing with TCP/IP from the actual architecture of TCP/IP to how it is implimented in certain types of networks, and more. In addition to the index where you can find instances of any topic that is covered in the book, every chapter is very well named and very effectively describes the contents of the chapter. In fact, listing the chapters would even suffice as an overview of what you can learn from the book.

Chapter 1: TCP/IP Architecture for Windows

Chapter 2: TCP/IP Protocols Infrastructure for Windows Networks

Chapter 3: Windows 2000 TCP/IP Implementation Details

Chapter 4: NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NBT)

Chapter 5: Installing the TCP/IP Protocol and Services

Chapter 6: Configuring TCP/IP

Chapter 7: TCP/IP Configuration Using the Registry and Perl

Chapter 8: TCP/Ip Protocol Traces

Chapter 9: Routing and Remote Access with Microsoft TCP/IP

Chapter 10: DHCP Configuration and Management

Chapter 11: TCP/IP Name Resolution Using WINS Windows 2000

Chapter 12: Windows 2000 Domain Name System Service

Chapter 13: Net Management for Microsoft Using SNMP

Chapter 14: Network File System Protocol Support for Microsoft Networks

Chapter 15: TCP/IP Mail and News Services fot Microsoft Network

Chapter 16: Monitoring and Optimizing TCP/IP Performance

Chapter 17: Kerberos Security in Windows 2000

Chapter 18: Implementing IPSec in Windows 2000

Chapter 19: Virtual Private Networks

The book contains detailed information about the structure of a variety of packets as well as protocols. It also breaks down the concepts of Windows 2000 DNS, WINS, DHCP, and other services and protocols that you must know if you are going to be dealing with networks that include support for Windows 2000, NT or 9x.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karinjit Siyan does it again., December 14, 2001
By Bedevere E Curry (Edison, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
It doesn't get any better than this book. I'm comparing this with the other books such as Sybex and Osborne. Mr. Siyan can make any complicated topic understandable. I love the traces section, SNMP, IPSEC, and DNS. I also recommend Mark Minasi. The 2 top W2K masters are Karinjit Siyan and Mark Minasi. You have to get this book if you want to get a technical advantage over the average system engineers.
