Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Windows 2000 Power Toolkit provides a comprehensive functional overview of Windows 2000 that is suitable for beginning and intermediate users wishing to expand their understanding of the operating system.

This book views Windows 2000 as a collection of features, which are explained in five primary sections ("Overview," "Nuts and Bolts," "Networking," "Management," and "Internet/Intranet Access"). Each section contains a series of chapters (there are 31 total, plus seven appendixes) dedicated to describing an aspect of Windows 2000. The chapters vary in technical depth but succeed in providing useful information about each topic. Each also offers a helpful list of additional resources, pointers to third-party applications, and references to corresponding tools in the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

While succeeding as a reference book, Windows 2000 Power Toolkit is not a cohesive tutorial to Windows 2000. Due to its broad scope and the contributions of many authors, the chapters read more like standalone articles than parts of a larger whole. This is fine if you want a single slice of information at a time, but troublesome if you want to read the book cover to cover.

The remarkable amount of material in this book will help both current users and newcomers to Windows 2000 with a working knowledge of other operating systems. But experienced users, programmers, and system administrators may wish for a more gritty technical reference. While Windows 2000 Power Toolkit occasionally falls short of being everything to everyone, it is a useful reference to regular users of Windows 2000 who want to explore all aspects of it.

It is also worthwhile to note that the majority of content in this book also applies to Windows XP. --Pete Ostenson

1.0 out of 5 stars I agree with the reviewer below, September 26, 2002

I bought this book a year ago......read once, put in the closet, never used again. Seriously, the authors are said to be great Windows gurus, but, as writers..umm welll....enough said.

Avoid this book, better get Mark Minasi's, which is not a great book but useful. Even better, use your browser and scan the web for Windows tips!

1.0 out of 5 stars This book SUCKS, August 31, 2001
I found this book to be useless ... for the skilled Net Admin. If you think that you are semi-skilled in the field most of this knowledge is commonplace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth the wait, May 18, 2001
By Samuel Jackendoff (Pittsburgh, PA USA) - See all my reviews
I just got my copy today. It seems to be highly readable (unlike many technical manuals) and well organized with a wealth of useful tuning/maintenance tips. Those that I did read - were comprehensive and easily comprehendible.

The CD has a wealth of demos and tools on it.

I must agree that the ease of use of the Times font is a superb idea. Too many times have I been stumped by Arial or Bookman Old Style. Read more
