Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Translated from the German, the text of this version of the Andersen fairy tale is unexceptional, but Watt's detailed double-paged spreads are beautiful. They are quieter in color with less dramatic close-up views than Jerry Pinkney's glowing picture book with the same title, which was a 2000 Caldecott Honor Book. Watts' active pastoral landscapes, filled with light and movement, capture the changing seasons and the sturdy, unwanted outsider's search for home. The story has enduring appeal and there's space for many versions on our shelves. Hazel Rochman

Product Description

Today's youngsters will be equally moved by the hapless ugly duckling, who, ridiculed and rejected by all, suffers terrible hardships. And they will celebrate along with him when he finally emerges triumphant as the most beautiful swan of all!

Bernadette Watts's detailed illustrations chronicle the bittersweet story with charm and poignancy.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Ugly Duckling (Hardcover)
This book made me very sad when the little duckling hatched and he was different. Just because he was grey and not yellow, and just because he was a little bigger than the other baby ducklings, did not give them the right to laugh, pick on, and make fun of the little gray duckling. It made me feel real good in the end when the little gray duckling became the beautiful white swan, and found the other swan who went through the same thing that he went through.
