Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Thyroid hormones are important to the functioning of a healthy body; but when the thyroid gland supplies too much, too little, or stops producing these vital hormones, many problems can occur. Women make up almost 80 percent of thyroid disorder patients; and when the thyroid gland starts to malfunction the repercussions for women are particularly serious.

M. Sara Rosenthal, the acclaimed author of The Thyroid Sourcebook, focuses on the thyroid's effect on the body, what treatments are available, and how to cope effectively with a chronic thyroid condition.

From the Back Cover

A woman's definitive guide to understanding and coping with thyroid disorders

Millions of women suffer from a thyroid condition; unfortunately, many of them may not know that the cause of their health problems is thyroid disease and so their symptoms often go undiagnosed. The most common thyroid disorders are autoimmune thyroid diseases, such as Hashimoto's disease and Graves' disease. And thyroid cancer is the fastest rising cancer among women. Now M. Sara Rosenthal, Ph.D., the most trusted voice on thyroid disorders, is helping women take charge of their health with a new, up-to-date edition of The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women.

This revised and updated second edition includes the latest research and corrects misinformation in other thyroid books. It addresses women's specific concerns about thyroid disease symptoms and treatment, including thyroid hormone therapy and how thyroid disease interacts with other women's health issues, such as pregnancy, menopause, emotional health, diet and weight gain, and other autoimmune disorders.

It answers your most urgent questions, including:

  • Are my panic attacks actually a symptom of too much thyroid hormone?
  • Is my fatigue related to hypothyroidism?
  • Is hormone replacement therapy an option for me?

The ultimate resource for any woman with a thyroid condition, The Thyroid Sourcebook for Women will help you make informed decision about your health in language you can understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars For newly diagnosed thyroid patients, August 28, 2001
By A Customer
This book is a good read for those newly diagnosed to thyroid disease. It offers the basic information on thyroid disease (Are you hyper or hypo, symptoms, medication, etc.) without overwhelming the reader. The author is very precise in her explanations also. For those of you looking for answers to more challenging and complex thyroid problems, this would NOT be the book to buy. It doesn't challenge any of the current practices and assumes that you have a simple problem that one pill will cure.

2.0 out of 5 stars Basically Boring., August 5, 2001
By A Customer
While the information in this book might be a good starting point for someone totally new to thyroid disorders, I found it too basic, and too entrenched in mainstream theory and treatments to be helpful. Too much repeating of information easily found on just about any thyroid drug manufacturer's website, or just from surfing around the web. It is not a book I kept for my personal library --which for me (books are life!) is unusual.
