Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
In Souped Up, Sally Sampson offers dozens of recipes for just about everyone's favorite comfort food. Whether as a first course or as a main course, soups offer a vast spectrum of flavors and soothing textures. Sampson divides soups into categories: pureed, cream, chunky, bean, chicken, fish, chili, chilled, and gazpacho. She also has a chapter on stews, a sort of transitional zone between soup and braised meat entrees. Sampson's soups cover many traditions, but there is only one Asian soup, a singular offering from Vietnam. Beyond standards, Sampson has recipes for squash soup with lime, garlic, and ginger; cucumber and walnut soup; curried spinach and lentil soup; and tropical fruit gazpacho. To round out a meal featuring one of these soups, she records some bread recipes to provide contrasting texture. For those needing even more sustenance, Sampson introduces seven sweets, such as brownies, oatmeal lace cookies, and an adaptable fruit tart. Mark Knoblauch

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, easy soups, October 9, 2005
By JC (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
I love this book, and have started making at least one soup recipe a week from it. It's tough deciding which one to cook, in fact. What I love about it: The recipes are not complicated, and do not call for obscure, hard to find ingredients. She explains things very well and offers helpful tips. Many of the recipes are very inexpensive, too. In addition, most of the recipes don't have big long ingredient lists, which is a big plus in my opinion. And they're not loaded with fat, either. Yet they still taste wonderful. My two favorites are the parsnip soup (which I never would've expected to like!) and the butternut squash with lime, garlic and ginger. I can't praise this book enough.

4.0 out of 5 stars Soup's On!, May 31, 2006
I am a huge fan of soup...it can be a simple, stand-alone dish or an elegant addition to a 5 course meal. I picked up this book to find some new ideas to make soup, and I have come away with some great offerings.

Some of my favorites include: Cream of Broccoli (it never tastes good unless homemade!), Potato and Celeriac, Creamy Vegetable, Mushroom, Barley & Leek, Hunter's Soup, Spicy Black Bean, Pasta e Fagioli, Three Bean, Beef Chili with Beer, Curried Chicken Stew, and Cocoa Cookies. The book includes sections on salad dressings, breads, and sweets to go along with your homemade soup.

The only improvements that could be made with this book would be to add color photographs of the dishes, and a spiral binding so that it could lay flat. Otherwise, the recipes are delicious and offer a great variety. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful soups!, August 12, 2008
By E. Hanner (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is one of the best cookbooks on the subject of soups I have ever seen. The recipes are easy to follow and every one has been fantastic. My family has been very happy with my results from using Souped Up. After making a few of Sally's soups you begin to think about flavors and spices differently as they apply to stocks and commonly available bases. I bought 4 copies of this book and gave one to each of my children and my sister who is a good cook. They all said they liked and use it frequently. Thank you Sally, great little book and a nice selection of tastes.
