Amazon.com Review

Dr. Mona Lisa Schulz reveals the intricate science behind women's intuition in The New Feminine Brain, and shows that while ignoring one's sixth sense can devastate the body, honoring its messages can lead to greater creativity, improved physical well-being, and joy. Coming from the pen of a board certified neuropsychiatrist, neuroscientist and medical intuitive, the topic receives just as much clinical attention as it does the breathe-out-and-tune-in type. Schulz begins with a crash course in neuropsychiatry to illustrate how the female brain's innate adaptability has caused women to literally rewire their thinking for survival in today's (man's) world. Unfortunately, the body doesn't always buy what the new feminine brain is selling. The result can mean disaster to a woman's health. Pinpointing the true source of one's physical aches, infections, diseases, and psychoses requires an honest look within.

Embracing her own Attention Deficit Disorder, Schulz zooms from rich discussions about gender brain wiring to quick patient stories, to questionnaires that help readers learn how their own brains are "wired for mood," "wired for fear," or wired for early senility. It's an interactive ride punctuated by dizzying lists, charts, and checklists that involve frequent page-flipping. Schulz point out that detailed descriptions of prescriptive medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements (complete with dosage recommendations and cautions regarding drug interaction), all include a caveat: simply medicating the body doesn't promise long-term physical and emotional health. Here, intuition must preside. Schulz responds with multiple strategies to help women nurture even the tiniest inner voice, and become their own best medical intuitives.--Liane Thomas

Review

"If you're fortunate, you'll cross the path of an authentic teacher once or twice in a lifetime. Dr. Schulz is that kind of teacher and is a woman who has found her unique genius and intuition. Furthermore, she's hilariously funny, with the rare ability to take complex material and make it seem perfectly simple. Her insights on the brain are brilliant. Her insights on life are remarkable. This is a book that every woman should read -- a must for our times."

-- Joan Borysenko, Ph.D., author of "Minding the Body, Mending the Mind" and "Inner Peace for Busy Women"

5.0 out of 5 stars women and men have needed this book for a long time!, September 3, 2005
Women and men have needed this book for a long time. Bravo to Mona Lisa Schulz, M.D. Ph.D., for writing it! The New Feminine Brain: How Women Can Develop Their Inner Strengths, Genius and Intuition, is actually a layman's course in neuropsychiatry in that it offers up the science that supports a full understanding of the feminine brain.

Women have always known that they are born multi-taskers, that they have a sixth sense and a great sensitivity. Through Schulz's findings we discover why: women have more connections between their hormonally sensitive right and left brains. This is their greatest asset and alas, can be their greatest downfall, leaving them vulnerable to illness and stress. Without the care that comes through nutritional needs, mental exercises and an expanded understanding, many women are allowing their brains to adapt to survive in a male-dominated world. And with that adaptation, there is less creativity, physical well-being and joy.

I loved this book. It's got it all: vitally important insight, solid clinical information, multiple strategies, and did I mention the humour? Schulz is hilarious in tone and sensitivity. If you appreciate the candor of Dr. Christianne Northrup's, The Wisdom of the Body, then you'll appreciate her dear friend Mona Lisa Schulz. You don't have to be female to read and value this optimistic book. It can change the way women and men think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for women! Amazing insights for men, too!, August 11, 2005
Okay, I'm a guy, and I have to admit, a book about the "new" feminine brain would not be at the top of my reading list. But my girlfriend saw the author appear on CBS this morning and dashes out and gets the book. And unsuspecting fellow that I am, I pick it up in an idle moment when I get home this evening and think to myself, "Maybe this will help me understand the way my girlfriend thinks."

And it did! I have a whole newfound insight into and appreciation of the way my girlfriend thinks. Too often relationship books fall into glib clichés about the way men and women have different "communication styles" but from what Ms. Schulz shows is that it goes a whole lot deeper than that.

And she backs up everything she says with super-clear explanations of the science behind it all. There are lots of fun tests that readers can use to see for themselves how their brains work, and even nutritional advice for improving everything from your intelligence to your mood. Way cool.

Now I wish Mona Lisa Schulz would write a book for the way guys' brains work (okay, okay, I can hear my girlfriend snickering at the very notion).

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for women and men, October 6, 2005
By Simone Barrington (Oregon, OH USA) - See all my reviews
I am a perimenopausal woman. I did not even know how much anxiety I was suffering from until I read The Feminine Brain.
Mona Lisa Schulz clearly, concisely, and with amazing medical clarity helps you understand yourself and the medical issues you are having, gives you greater unsights about others, and a much broader understanding of the human brain. If it seems like it might be too "heady" of a read, it is not. I could not put the book down I was so fascinated by the information.
