Product Description

Her name is Sara Pezzini. A New York City homicide detective with a deadly secret: A few years ago, she came into the possession of the Witchblade, a mystic weapon of unknown origin that has existed for centuries. Grateful to have first used it when her life was in danger, Sara soon learned the lesson every owner of the device has been taught through the years: The Witchblade is not controlled by anyone -- it does the controlling...

A series of brutal murders have been committed in New York, and the trail of bodies seems to lead back to Russian mob boss Lazlo Kontra. But are the killings really gang-related, or the work of a mysterious group called the Order of the Raven -- a group that seems to know all about Sara Pezzini's secret...?

At the moment, though, the Order and the Russian Mafia are the least of Sara's problems. Rumors have been spreading through the NYPD about cops on the take, and one of the accusatory fingers has been pointed directly at Sara. Now Internal Affairs is looking into her activities, and they've taken a particular interest in the more unusual aspects of her past cases -- situations in which Sara had been forced to use the Witchblade to bring murderers to justice.

Caught between special prosecutors, gangsters, and mystical killers, Sara must once again call upon the Witchblade in order to survive -- but will it answer that call when she needs its power the most...?

5.0 out of 5 stars Hardboiled and Magical, March 22, 2002
By A Customer
This is always the toughest kind of novel to write, adapting a work from another media. In this case, De Chancie has to deal with *2* versions - comics and TV.

He pulls it off. With style, with humor and with a story that flows along so smoothly that once you start reading, your jaw will drop at the adventures of Det Sara Pezzini. A tough cop in the Phillip Marlow vein, she still struggles to make sense of the strangest magical icon you've ever seen.

And its the background details that make this novel work. One of my favorite scenes was at the concert. De Chancie so captured the mood, I thought I was there!

A great read, well plotted and written by a master of the Horror field!

(When's the sequel due?)

4.0 out of 5 stars a fun book, March 5, 2002
By A Customer
Okay, so it's *not* particularly based on the tv version of "Witchblade". It's not really a problem either. The storyline is still easy enough to follow even if the TNT show is all you've seen. It only takes a little while to adjust to the slightly different spin and then it's an entertaining read. So there's no Danny, Dante, or Gabriel and Joe's still on active duty. Ian is autonomous and Jake knows there's *something* going on with the Witchblade even if he isn't quite sure what it is. Irons and Sara are almost completely recognizable in their tv forms though, and their scenes together have some of the most amusing dialogue of the book. The paranormal aspects are interesting (although I was rather reminded of Zelazny's Merlin, who created a sentient magical computer named Ghost Wheel - If you've read both you'll see the triple connection) and the shadow world was fascinating. So it's not Pulizer material, but it's still an enjoyable, recommendable story for a casual read.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Based on the hit series"? Uh ... NO!
If you're expecting this to be based on the Witchblade television series (from, say, the copy and Yancy Butler on the front cover), think again. It's based on the comic. Read more
