About the Author

Award-winning author Christie Golden has written over thirty novels and several short stories in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Golden launched the TSR Ravenloft line in 1991 with her first novel, the highly successful Vampire of the Mists. She is the author of several original fantasy novels, including On Fire's Wings, In Stone's Clasp, and Under Sea's Shadow, the first three in her multi-book fantasy series ?The Final Dance? from LUNA Books.

 

Among Golden's other projects are over a dozen Star Trek novels and the well-received StarCraft Dark Templar trilogy, Firstborn, Shadow Hunters, and the forthcoming Twilight. An avid player of Blizzard's MMORPG World of Warcraft, Golden has written several novels in that world (Lord of the Clans, Rise of the Horde) with three more in the works. She has also written two Warcraft manga stories for Tokyopop, ?I Got What Yule Need? and ?A Warrior Made.? I found this novelization really helped my understand parts of End Game (the episode) that I missed the first time I watched it. I found the episode rushed through a lot and of course, there was no closure. Sure they arrived home but that's it. Tom didn't even see baby Miral yet! And Admiral Paris didn't say two words about Tom, just glanced at him a second. The book covers a lot of missing issues. The captain's delima with raising children on the ship, Tom's concern for B'llana while his trying to fly the ship, the Captain picking up on the Admiral's hints about the future, etc. However, the best part of the book is the sneak peak at Homecoming, probably because it starts the closure the End Game didn't touch. I can't wait until it comes out.

Let me first mention that I wrote this review before the events of September 11, and now that it is four days later, I wish only to keep it posted here, in the hopes that it may give us a glimpse into a bright, new future - not only for those characters we love in the Trek universe, but for ourselves as well.

Some might accuse me of showing favoritism when it comes to my reviews of the Trek novels. Okay...guilty! It's just that because I love Star Trek, I find little fault with those who write in that universe. Plus, I only read the novels that interest me, so of course my reviews might be more favorable than if I were reading them *all.* But I digress. On to "Endgame."

Janeway had a mission, and that was to get her crew home. She did. End of story. Anyone who thinks there should have been more to that story *must* read this novelization. The blanks are nicely filled in with all the things the televised episodes do not have enough time for. Add to that Diane Carey's unique maritime writing style (the "icebreaker prow" of one of the cube's corners, for example), her delicious narrative ("Seven had never been at ease with the way men looked at her. Having no barometer of social tenderizing with which to judge things as fleeting as physical presence, she didn't know she was an eagle's cry from average.") and her use of the number 47, and, well, you've got yum with a spoon!

Certainly, the whole TV episode is in there, but the additional information provided by thoughts and narrative make for a much deeper, more understandable, story. About the only fault I found was the number of typos (7). But that's no big deal when it comes to the story as a whole.

As to Christie Golden's four chapters of "Homecoming" at the end, I'm not ashamed to say I cried a little, and I cannot wait to read the whole thing. Resolution abounds for many characters and hints at more to come. It's obvious resolution's not the *only* thing going on in "Homecoming," but for a teaser, well, let's just say I'm saving my pennies to buy the book.

I believe Diane Carey did a good adapting what was an ok script. She added details which were not shown in the final episode (Chakotay's conversation with Seven about similarities between Seven and his mother; Paris's thoughts while his wife is giving birth and worrying about the Borg: etc.)I believe this book would have been better as a regular size paperback but I enjoyed it alot. I also can't wait for Christie Golden's Voyager Homecoming Novel. The sneak peek we were given was excellent. I hope it comes out soon and that Miss Golden comes up with a new and improved version of Voyager..."Voyager A" for the crew to reunite on and find a way to save the baby that was assimilated
